Well I finally got back into my 89 MJ, 4.0, peugeot 5 speed and pulled off the tranny to inspect the clutch assembly.
Reason is there was a metal to metal scraping sound that would happen when the truck was started. If I pushed the clutch in, it would go away, release the clutch, it comes back. I could shift and drive up and down gears. Also after about 11 minutes she would die(everytime) and then restart when the engine cooled again(no spark but yes fuel)
So I bought a clutch kit and a CPS as I am pretty sure that the CPS is causing the engine to die.
I took off the old clutch components thinking that the most probable thing was a worn throwout bearing, as this would cause the clutch to rub if it wasn't working properly.
Well it's my first time inside the bell housing, but nothing looks worn or broken at all, including the throwout bearing. Also the clutch and pressure plate, etc look like they are barely worn(in comparison to the new ones). It appears that the noise was from the flywheel scraping against the spacer plate, since there is gouging scrapes on it right where the flywheel is. So I might just put the old clutch stuff in and the new CPS which will probably fix the stalls.
What I don't get is, why would that noise on the spacer plate die if I push in the clutch pedal? There were 2 screws missing from the bell housing(the 2 PITA ones; the last guy must have left them off) I guess I will replace those with regular screws.
It seems like the 2 things would not be connected, but I don't see any other unusual wear. Also I am surprised at the wussiness of the spacer plate that bends really easily.
I'll try to get pics up too, appreciate the help. What I'm thinking is to just bend it back a little, screw everything together and rebleed the hydraulic fluid.
