Use OEM. They're threaded 1/2"-20, the ones for the A/T flexplate are .590" long. I think the ones for the M/T flywheels will be between 5/8" (.625") and 3/4" (.750") long - I'd appreciate confirmation on that.

However, they are not the typical "hex head capscrews" that you find in the hardware store, and you don't want to use them as replacements. The flywheel/flexplate screws are of a type known as "place bolts" - they're designed for positive clamping force and the ability to take higher shear loading than the typical capscrew, by virtue of modifications to the underhead bearing surface.

If you insist on trying to find them in the aftermarket, I'd suggest checking with Fastenal or anyplace that caters to farm and industrial equipment (like Quality Farm & Fleet back home) - and look for "place bolts" there. The counterman should know what you're talking about.

Don't even bother trying to find them in your local hardware store - I haven't seen place bolts in a common hardware/DIY store in about thirty years.

It's really not worth it to try to use a common hex head capscrew to replace a place bolt - you're just asking for the thing to fail (and it's usually somewhere that a failure will be drastic, disastrous, and extremely difficult to service.)

Really, it's not worth the trouble. Last time I needed replacement flexplate screws, I got them from ARP (worked out to about seven dollars per screw!) because I did not want them to fail.

Believe me, it's not worth taking a chance. If your flexplate or flywheel comes loose, you're going to have much larger problems very quickly.

I know I often advocate replacing the OEM hardware with something that isn't OEM - because the replacement is better - but this is one case where the OEM got it right.

haha, ken measured them on saturday.....but then started drinking, might want to call him because I don't think bolt sizes are worth his 20k post

you can have them if you want, don't think Jay is taking them, might want to check with him
