FLORIDA To require Drug screening for welfare

Nothing to discuss, it should have been done a long time ago.

"What (Scott) is doing is giving ugly legitimacy to an unfortunate stereotype that has been in this country for a couple of decades that all welfare recipients are a bunch of drug abusers," said Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida.

that's a strange leap of logic-- it seems that the recipients of public monies would be the only ones able to give legitimacy to or discredit the stereotype based on test results.

I don't know how things are in florida, but here in CA I'd like to see a 6 month limit on welfare assistance. Also drug testing, and proof of job application submissions - just like parolees have to do once a week.

There is a federal 36 month limit. Once you reach that, you are done forever.

I know Utah requires you to job search and prove you are doing so while on any kind of assistance.

The same people have been living in the complex next to my NAPA shop on a full ride with free rent, food stamps, and a monthly assistance check for longer than the 6 years I have been working there. I was talking to one of the guys about his brand spanking new cadillac escalade last summer, and he told me all he has to do is show up once a month and tell his caseworker he applied for a job - he doesn't even have to show proof. I don't know what the regulation says but this is how it's being enforced told to me directly from someone who has been on welfare since 2005.

people like that should be eliminated from society.

I agree, I was less enthusiastic about his new car than him as I leaned on my 11 year old saturn that I can't afford to replace the hub bearings on.

I know welfare has its place and I support it where it is actually needed.... BUT im tired of seeing people take advantage of us Tax payers! If I cannot even afford my addictions (not drugs) why should people on welfare get to??

Congrats to Florida! I hope to see 49 more states follow!

If you starve all the welfare recipients to death, who will be left for vote for Obama? :dunno:

It's odd that some people from the onset are opposed to drug testing for welfare or unemployment recepients; yet, it's the employed who are usually mandated to take these "tests" and pay for these programs through their taxes.

Another big issue is the disincentive of able-bodied recepients to ever find work or otherwise get off the programs. It's a terrible cycle that has worked its way into suceeding generations. People grow up without knowing the dignity that comes from hardwork or caring for the things purchased with money earned. Instead, theres's an expectation of dependency.
