Floor Replacement, Man what a job

Well, I began last weekeknd removing the rotten floor from my 1988 XJ. I started with the passenger side since it was the worst. Having grinding discs but unable to figure how to make them work with the grinders I had, I turned to an air chisel with the forked bit. Worked great for the down and dirty job of getting metal out of the way. I then switched to a chisel blade and removed the metal retained my spot welds. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Today, I got going again and got the right discs for the grinder and did the final trim work on the passenger side. The bad thing is I'm going to need some additional metal since the rust goes just beond the front and rear of the replacement floor. Hopefully I can scare up a few scraps for that.

I then dove into the drivers side. It was in better shape than the passenger side with less rust so it didn't just fall out of the way but since I had a plan from doing the previous side, it went better.

I still need to grind down the surface rust, treat the metal with a rust converter, and then prepare the new panels to go in.

FYI, this job sucks and I almost wish I had left the carpet in so I wouldn't have known how bad it was. It will be better in the end though. Maybe I can get this job completed by next weekend.

Re: Man what a job

why not just find a xj carcass with a good body. and transfer your miseries to it?

Re: Man what a job

because those of us who have 1988 jeeps are attached to the damn things. :D

ed, i know there are replacement tub pieces you can order, depending on how bad your rust is, but i took a wrecked XJ and cut its floors out and welded em in. then fiber glassed the whole shabang in and its sealed, sound deadening, and looks like i bedlined that section.

and i think we need pics of this job you speak of :D

Re: Man what a job

Damn, maybe he was too busy riding his heep of cancer to take pictures.

Re: Man what a job

I took some pics of my progress so far. If you guys have ever noticed, I have never posted a picture before. Mark has always helped do that for me. Unfortunately he doesn't have internet access right now so......

Cutting out and welding in new floors will be much better in the long run. While it seems like a lot of work, I think it is less work than buying another vehicle with money I don't have and swapping everything out.

I guess everyone will have to come to Harlan to see it in person.

Re: Man what a job

Some where on the right side of my jeep has been leaking too. I have surface rust and a awl made hole, had to get the water out from the pass side floor board some how. I took a box cutter and chopped all the carpet out except for the drivers side. Now I am just waiting for 5 sunny days in a row so I can let my Herc. liner dry. Hope your having fun with the project tho.

X2^ I'm a computer retard and even I figured it out (without the help of the much younger and computer savy Mrs. Shorty)

set up the account (free) and copy-n-paste the image code into your post where you want the picture to be.

Re: Man what a job

I have some before pics still that show how bad it is on the passenger side. I'm going to try and get those to Mark soon.

Got a little more trimming and junk done but not motivated at all.

I'm going to be messing around with it today so maybe I can actually get somewhere. I have a lot of prepwork to do still.
