Well, I began last weekeknd removing the rotten floor from my 1988 XJ. I started with the passenger side since it was the worst. Having grinding discs but unable to figure how to make them work with the grinders I had, I turned to an air chisel with the forked bit. Worked great for the down and dirty job of getting metal out of the way. I then switched to a chisel blade and removed the metal retained my spot welds. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Today, I got going again and got the right discs for the grinder and did the final trim work on the passenger side. The bad thing is I'm going to need some additional metal since the rust goes just beond the front and rear of the replacement floor. Hopefully I can scare up a few scraps for that.
I then dove into the drivers side. It was in better shape than the passenger side with less rust so it didn't just fall out of the way but since I had a plan from doing the previous side, it went better.
I still need to grind down the surface rust, treat the metal with a rust converter, and then prepare the new panels to go in.
FYI, this job sucks and I almost wish I had left the carpet in so I wouldn't have known how bad it was. It will be better in the end though. Maybe I can get this job completed by next weekend.
