FJ 40

I think Nissan still makes a Patrol but it's only overseas. It looks kinda like a Montero.

I like the styling of those Root but I'm not seeing too much in the way of sheetmetal parts. It would be a shame to dent it on a rock.

Correct, they still make Patrols. IIRC they went IFS like the TLCs.

It is slab sided... it could be easier to repair for an experienced bodyman but still $$$$$ if you don't have the skills yourself.

Between the LR, TLC and Patrol I think the TLC is the way to go because of availability and robustness. The LR is somewhat available but... If you are still thinking GM V8 then LR or TLC is probably a toss up although the TLC is likely to have less "weird engineering".

If you are entertaining the LR at all do yourself a favour and download the Discovery Channel program "A 4x4 is Born". They take a Series III (IIa?) down to the "frame" and go from there. After watching that I got a dislike for LR. I really don't like the way the series LRs go together. Sure its modular but there is no designed in compliance between tub and frame and from what I could tell no real attempt at addressing galvanic corrosion (aluminum body on steel frame).

LR fans feel free to correct me. Maybe that build was a "bodged job"? ;)

I went through all these "mental gymnastics" when I got out of the Suzuki-thang. I ended up with an XJ and CJ8. :) You get tired of swimming upstream after a while. That said, I have a soft spot for the TLCs. There is a diesel HZ-61 for sale locally. Sweet. That is the square but modern wagon with the blister/bubble roof. Way cool. :) They want way too much for it though.

Ever consider a C101 Commando? :)

There's a Commando here in town that's just parked at a 4x4 shop sitting outside. Hasn't moved in a year. I just don't like the way they look as much as a Cruiser. Never seen one modified though but I still don't think I'd like it. They're both pretty boxy in design though so I don't know what it is.

They actaully look pretty butch when built. I'll scare up some images tonight.

They are about as rare as any of the other vehicles discussed in my experience so there is no gain there. IMO it's also another vehicle you'd be inclined to gut the entire driveline for newer/commoner stuff.

OK Boris. I'll try to calm down a little for ya. Is it wrong to talk about particular vehicles in an OT forum? You're telling me to search? Maybe you should have calmed down a bit and not been so impatient when your new shiny exhaust arrived. You couldn't even read the fawkin directions. How would it have been if the MEMBERS of this club told a USER to search and not provided you with some of the answers that you have found to be helpful?

:dunno:

Dude,
You really need to calm down a little...:laugh3:
I think you need to read my original post a second time
I may have spaced it a little...but I really told you to calm down AND not to rush WHEN it comes to buying the FJ 40, coz its obvious that you eventually will buy one. I also told you that, if you take your time in your search for the right vehicle, you will eventually find a great deal. In this game, patience pays off, not luck.
I don't see anything bad in what I said...
My apologies, but it seems that you took it all wrong

Actually no, what you said the first time was perfectly clear. Its you who is now confused. What you wrote above couldn't be more elementary and is unlikely to be an accurate representation. What you wrote earlier was succinct and clear...

How about a Defender or a Unimog if you have lots of cash to spend on a toy? They are both uncommon and both wheel!

Here's the pics as promised. Commandos are one of those vehicles that can be made to look as cool (so ugly it's cool) or as ugly (ugly righ to the bone) as you want.

I dig them.

Nope, C101s run the odd fire Buick V6 and TH400 (IIRC). Not a bad combo - wouldn't really need to swap it unless the heart was set on a V8. T-case is Dana 20 I think... Axles are 44/30. The 44 is a course spline count. They are narrow track axles. For all intents and purposes junk.
