i will add used gears suck to get a pattern.....i tried to get alot of drag on the pinion thats why you will notice the pattern being more or less pronounced in different pics.

Your going to need to get a more substantial pattern, I would also tighten up the backlash.

BTW.... the pinion looks to deep!

hey outlander, I read through your thread. I set up gears for a living and I'm more then happy to help you with your endeavors. Used gear pattern is rather difficult to get a good pattern (sometimes) but it is definitely do-able. Case preload on HP Dana 30s you will want 9-12 inlbs of turning torque added on top of the pinion preload measurment. If you are looking for an exact shim to use to achieve proper case load it is a hit or miss. Their is a general rule of thumb to get you in the ball park but it's not exact. As for that general rule of thumb adding .003-.005' to both side of the carrier.

In regards to your picture. That pinion is way to deep. Post what your pinion depth shim is. I would remove .010" from that and pattern check.

The most important thing with used gears are to get them back as close as possible to the original numbers!

this is the pinion depth the guy who built it set it up at(this is a new carrier though)
the pattern you see above is me hoping i could use the original pinion depth the "pro" set it up at.

so i need to decide if my next step is gonna be a shallower pinion adjustment or tighten the BL and see where the pattern is....ill have to stare at it and ponder....hmmm
