Finally found an XJ

I have been in the market for a decent XJ for a while. waiting on the right one to come along. I found a 1993 model in town for sale. It's a 4 door 4 wheel drive. Exactly what I am looking for. It needs tires and a steering column. Guy says it's tapping when idling, like maybe the lifters or rocker arms. It's already got a 3 inch RC lift, which he says include LCAs and springs and shocks.

Questions are:

What could be the tapping, and is this serious? How easy of a fix?

How hard to change steering column?

He has it marked for $1000, but says he's very flexible on the price. How much would be a good offer?

Since it already has the 3 inch lift with LCAs could I throw on a 1-1.5 inch spacer without any major probelms?

Yea you can add the spacers I've got 4.5in of lift with stock control arms it's just a lil bit more rough of a ride but it's not bad at all

How many miles are on it?

"tapping" can be several things. Best way to narrow it down if it's coming from the engine is to get a stethoscope of some sort (good piece of 2x4 works well) and start poking around. Poke around up top and on the bottom to see if it's more pronounced on the top end or the bottom end. This will give you a better idea of what it might be (rocker arms, lifters, bearings...etc)

I'd offer him somewhere in the area of $500-750 and go from there...especially if it's got a tapping noise.

You definetly can throw in the spacers like 01greenxjsport said. As far as the "tapping" goes it may be nothing every jeep i know has a "tick" so he may be referring to that. Whats wrong with the steering column the only reasons i could see it having to be replaced is because its either bent, broken, or not there it may just be a bad u joint in the column. If worse comes to worse it will probably take about an hour start to finish to replace the steering column. I would definetly start out like UNCC_99XJ said around $500 and compromise at $750 but wouldn't pay much more then that pending condition of vehicle and miles. How is everything else have you driven it or seen it in person?

I emailed him back, and told him I have $500 I would bring him this weekend. I haven't heard back. He said something to the extent of needing a column, because it has to be cranked with a screw driver. I am assuming maybe the key barrel is messed, which is nothing too big of a concern if I get it. It's going to be a play toy and hunting truck. It will be parked in the back yard for the majority of the time.

I guess we will see what he says about $500.

500 bucks all day, see xj's on craigslist with similar issues for 1000 all day that need nothing.

Almost bought a 96 2 months ago for 600 bucks, 4.5 inch lift and 31s 140k miles but had a blown head gasket.

Going to look at an XJ tommorow with 3/4 ton swap and a blown head gasket, see how low I can't get him but deals are out there if your willing to be patient man. If you can get it home for under 600 bucks, take it.

A "tap" is usually more related to a spun rod bearing which is a common problem. Top end, such as lifters (which cause rocker arm issues) are generally a "tick"ing sound...

I haven't heard from him. I am waiting. I have been looking for about a year, but it's just a toy, so I ain't gonna sink a bunch of money into it right off the bat. I do, however, want something I can drive, but needs to do some work on.

consider replacing the engine soon..
or.. Doug has a Comanchee that needs an engine for 600

if you want a cheap project.. talk to shortxjdoug

Just saw your quote, on the jeep that I painted Orange, we were literally in walmart in the paint section, I had in my hands Hot Pink, Neon Green, or the Orange. I told my gf at the time the choice was hers... I was wanting to go Pink for the sole purpose of saying "You got outwheeled by the Pink Jeep" she was less comfortable with it than I was lol, she voted Dukes of Hazzard and the disaster began there.

Well, i never heard back from him. I found a few stockers thought last night in the $400-$800 range.

Thanks for the heads up on the Comanche, but I need the back seat for my daughter. She's still in a car seat, and she likes to go on country drives down dirt roads and such.

As far as a project, that's what I want. I wanna be able to drive it, but if it needs some work that's fine too.

I found one that's Camo, in FL for $400, but it needs paint (I can paint), and it has no title. Does anyone know the process of applying for a title in FL, if I live in GA?

She loves the open air feeling, and would probably enjoy the hell out of that, but I somewhat like having the wife around, and she'd kill me!

Too bad, I can't see Craigslist at work. I will have to check those out when I get home this evening.

Thanks for looking out guys. It seems like this may be my new favortie hangout once I get my JEEP and start playing with it.
