factory cooling

I wonder if this problem is specific to earlier XJs, I assume maybe earlier than 95 or 98 - I have an 01 now, and my 99 didn't have any problems running the 180 either. I also ran a 160 briefly in the 99, also with no issues (except it was just TOO cold in the winter!).

Howdy all,
I just joined the site, as I bought my better half an 89 XJ last week, well imagine this, it overheats, lol, thus my journey here to the light side, (Me being a Scout guy) so far, I pretty much had planned on changing away from the closed loop joke that I found under the hood of this beast, new rad, heater valve, overflow, and hoses,, now after reading this, and several other overheat threads, I believe I will go with several things all at once, and just be done (hopefully) this is tomorrows project, as she has no wheels til i get this thing together. So for the sake of peace in the family, I HAVE to fix it tomorrow, lol...
Anyway, say hey to the Noob here, and if any of you are from Co4x4, youll know me there by the same name........Thanks for all the bits of advice, and glad to know I am not the only one in this boat, was starting to really worry that i had thrown away money on this thing......

I have been informed, that there will be NO transforming of the XJ under any circumstances, short of her getting a brandy new vehicle,, oh but I have to make it run right for her to use to go back and forth to the peoples republic, every day... geesh, cant shoot em,, well I spose ya could, but thats another topic all together....

And the verdict is----------

Fixed mine,, just open the hood and throw money at it,, eventually you hit the source of the problem,, I will probably never know for sure what exactly it was, as I replaced every doggone thing there is, as well as going to an aftermarket trans cooler, not plumbed thru the Rad. got it all changed out, took it out for an hour and just thrashed the heck out of it, and never got above 210... good enough for the better half to get around in, I hope lol.....

this is a great thread lot of good info i am having some heat issues too! Looks like ill be throwing my 3 row back in and i just ordered a b&m tranny cooler (24000 gvw) and i will bypass the rad and go straight to the cooler, I will also check my belt as it squeeks sometimes and while my rad is off i will check my water pump..
