Extended warranty? Do you have one?

Whats your take on these? My warranty is up on saturday. I have had a crap load of rear diff probs and am a little worried that this crap might keep up after the warranty is up.

Things that have gone wrong and replaced w/ warranty:

1) Carrier bearing blew--rec'd entire new rear axle
2) Rear brake cylinders blew- both sides replaced
3) Thermostat housing blew. got a new one.
4) Currently, I have a funky high pitched noise in first gear. Two dealers said its normal. But I still am sketchy of this issue.

Do you guys rec extended warranties? I plan on selling with in a year...Do they help for re-sale?

If you're looking at resale value, make sure the warranty is transferrable.

I was looking into one sponsered by DC. They say its transferrable 100%. JS
If it's for resale then the warranty might help you sell it easier, but not necessarily add to the value.

It shows you're in LA and since you're talking about noise in 1st I'd guess it's a manual. Kind of curiuos, if you were to sell it now, how much would you want for it and what have you done to it so far?? :D

Interesting thing about warranties. By federal law, if you show the problem existed before the end of the warranty they have to fix it after warranty. Take it in and complain about the problem and get it in writing.

NOt only on writing but make sure it goes in the data base and you get a computer printout of the report. From then on you can use the ticket number in the event you need to track it in the future or get it fixed...

When I bought my 98 I got the 100K extended warranty. Doing 185mi a day commuting I racked up the miles fast and the fuel pump/gas gauge dead instrument panel did not show up till around 50K which was out of the 36K factory waranty that covered that stuff. The extended warranty only covered 'lubricated parts' like engine, tranny, diffs, TC so I was out of luck.

i always thought extended warrantys were a crock of poo.... until i need a new engine last year... at 72K miles my 99 had some pretty bad piston slap.. the real pain was having to produce sales reciepts for oil and filters from the previous year... not an easy task but i did find them.... that was only because i do all my own maintenance... so to cover myself now i take it to the dealer every other oil change so i have documentation that the oil is being changed every 6000 miles as the warranty requires....

I myself am not a huge fan of extended warranties. Most of the time, things that may need to be fixed, never reach the value of the warranty. Much like insurance, you pay into, but rarely get the money back out of it. Which is how they make their money.
Only person I have heard of recently that actually got their monies worth is a guy here at work. He had a 97 Vette that was continually in the shop. He said the warranty saved him over 10K in repairs. He thinks the biggest problem was the local dealer didn't know their way around Vettes, so things had to keep going back for repair.

If it were me, I would save the money and learn to work on it yourself. If worse comes to worse, you can use the money to pay for a rental car, while you fix it in the evenings
