Experience w/ Land Rovers?

I was cut off in traffic by a green one a few years back. Does that count?

I have not personally owned one, but I have had them come through the dealership I wok at. They ussually seem to hold together, and their value. The last one we had was a 97 w/ 120k. It seemed to be in freat shape. Ran good. I almost bought a Range Rover once, but the maintence, and aftermarket parts priced viered me away. Not sure if that is relavent for the discoverys or not.
I wouldn't want a discovery as a tow vehichle for the simple reason, I would end up taking it wheeling one week end when my XJ was down, and break it, or never think about the XJ again :) Four wheelin with comfort

a friend of mine has a 98 discovery.

he hasnt had too many problems with it as far as i know, and he does ZERO maintenance to it.

i LOVE the interior-- raised roof, 2 full size sunroofs, those cool little roof window thingys in the back...

and with the back gate open, there is a LOT of room to put stuff in the back

heh... i know if i had one, i would want to throw at least a 3" lift with 31's on it though

Friend of mine has an '02 and loves it.
He was going to pull me to Moab till I had to cancel.

Looked at 2-3 `97 and `98 vintage ones when I was shopping for the XJ two years ago.

Impressions: rusty POS (even the aluminium had rust streaks, wtf?), crappy materials used in interior (all beat to snot wood trim, etc.), gutless, crappy fuel economy. Loved the format of the interior. Lots of room, lots of glass, easy to see in almost all directions.

A Disco that was taken care of with a small block Chev/Ford/Dodge engine would be the ticket in my opinion.

My friend has a 97.. its a beast.. but I wouldnt buy one for towing duties.. short wheelbase by itself makes it less then desireable for towing.. but add in the gutless motor and horrible gas mileage and you realize its not worth it. Repair and Maintenance parts are another story.. they are rediculously expensive. They are british, which means they are "quirky". Do yourself a favor and buy a real tow rig.. $.02

Think of an XJ 4.0 that has bad rings, old plug wires, a clogged cat and a bad air filter, and you have approximated the "power" level of the 4.0 Rover V-8.

My only experience is from what I have read and ONE friend that owned one, electrical problems are a biggie and very very very expensive to fix. The LR crowd on a few forums are very vocal about that 'quirk'. I'm guessing the electrics are 'be home by dark' Lucas.
Nice looking though, expensive, classy, upper crust and all that...
Would I buy one ? Nope, go thru a few online parts sites and price some basic repair parts like waterpumps, alternators, fuel pumps, etc, just make sure you are sitting down when you do it...
He priced a new wiring harness from the dealer, wow, I've seen 97 TJ's in good condition cheaper on autotrader.com.
Just check out the maintenance prices for parts, thats a good reality check.

Contact Grant on this forum. He owns one.

A buddy of mine has one and he wants to sell it so bad but no one wants it.
He hates it worse then any vehicle he has ever owned.

For example....
He needed to replace the wiper blades. Went to walmart and looked on their little computer thingy....no LR wiper blades. Come to find out...They are a dealer only item. One wiper blade...45 freakin dollars. For ONE!

Not too long after that he needed to replace the belts, a temperature sender and a idler pulley. 600 bucks later he was on his way.

The electronics are a nightmare. They all leak oil. The gas mileage is horrible.

There is a reason they rank very lowest in customer satisfaction.

Example:
I went past an import garage where an older Range Rover was parked outside.
I called to see if it was for sale.
The owner of the garage said it probably would be since the current owner couldn't afford to fix it.
When I asked what was wrong he said it needed a fuel pump.

Why do Brits drink warm beer?
Cause Lucas makes their refrigerators.

thats what I remembered from past times thanks all, I will just leave that one sit. J

Unless you have the pockets to support it it's not worth it IMO. Now a defender on the other hand......those are cool even when they are not running... :D
You could buy it, just make sure it gets it's own parking space that won't block any of the others, that way if it does break you won't have to be inconvienienced while you are saving up to get it fixed, some flowers, few shrubs and you got a british redneck lawn ornamemt.

they are pieces of $HIT!!!!!!!!

stay far away from them. if ANYTHING breaks on them, it'll cost you a huge amount of money.

The only one I ever saw that I liked:

I've owned a 1998 Discovery since new.

Seems like a lot of the haters on this thread have NO actual experience with one. Or are complete idiots - wiper blades only available from a dealer, c'mon turn in your drivers licence - you are too stoopid to drive.

Nice dig at the power Crash :laugh3:

I've towed an XJ from CO to the Rubicon behind the Landy, I could not tow the Landy behind the XJ across town, let alone across country. If a LR can tow an XJ from Denver to the Eisenhower Tunnel it can handle most any load, anywhere.

For mild to medium trails I'd take a Land Rover over an XJ anytime, they are more capable given equal driver ability. CO Fest 2004 stands as an example.

The Landy just past 120K miles. I have had every service done as scheduled at the dealer - the Landy is one vehicle I do not service myself, though it is easy enough to do. The dealer in Denver (Denver East) is the best dealer experience I have encountered, any vehicle, any dealer, anywhere.

Items replaced in 120K miles, not under service schedule.

Alternator - once at 90K miles, once at 95K miles - the second replacement was due to a bad alternator bearing, my fault for buying generic rather than LR brand. 2nd alternator was covered under Carquest warranty.

Radiator - pierced by road debris at 70K miles, removed, repaired, replaced.

Items replaced as needed

Brake pads at 60K and again recently

Shocks at 115K

Wiper blades every year - while the dealer blades MAY cost over $40, 17" and 18" blades can be bought at your local parts store for $7.

Bad LR faults

High cost when new - the LR3's are $50K - crazy price for ANY SUV

Parts cost - can be high. And there are not as many LR's in junk yards. But be smart - don't order parts for a 98 LR Discovery, order parts for a 68 Buick V8 (same motor, same parts number, different price)

Lack of shop monkeys - break down in a small town, and the local mechanic will be hesitant to work on them furrin cars.

Aftermarket parts - not as plentiful or cheap when compared to domestic SUV's.

Aluminum body panels - great for saving weight, terrible when you need to repair them. Some bodyshops will not work on LR's.

Ergonomics - designed by the British as a right hand drive. Some very unusual quirks as a result. I'm 6'2" and no matter how I adjust the wheel/seat I can never see the top of the speedo, or the light indicating the headlights are on bright. Stop lights can be difficult to see under the windshield header (easier to watch the reflection in the hood)

Summary

Without doubt I would buy another LR Discovery. But given that LR's usually last hundreds of thousands of miles I doubt I will be facing that decision soon.

I will agree with this, i have driven my friends a few times and at 6'3" It was a bit strange.
I think the big thing is the cost of ownership..enough said.

oh, and "Landy" thats just lastara

grant - you're right, i have to admit, i have little personal experience with them. i took in a handful on trade - and, unfortunately, several of them were simply HUGE money pits. it seemed as if the air suspension on ALL of them didn't work! and that is a GIGANTIC repair cost.

i'm just hesitant to own a vehicle that has both a TERRIBLE maintenance reputation (VERY accurately deserved) AND expensive/difficult-to-find repair facilities.

yours may be the exception to the rule, and i strongly believe it is. ANY manufacturer that trades spots with KIA as THE LEAST reliable nameplate isn't going to end up in my garage!!

buyer beware....
