exhaust question

I was thinking about putting an aftermarket muffler and directly after that, a piece that angles the exhaust to the ground, instead of running the pipe up and over the axle, and out the back. Was wondering if anyone else had done this. my main concern is keeping it smog legal up here. It might also be illegal because the exhaust has the potential to enter the cabin?(some states the exhaust has to go at least past the cabin, or in our case, the back of the rear doors) Any ideas, has anyone else done this? I was thinking of doing a flowmaster. Thanks guys

Had mine done at bucky's in federal way, it turns down right before the rear axle.I haven't had any problems with cops, but i also don't have to get it smogged.I work in federal way you can come check it out any time today if you would like.Pm me.

Yeah, i think i saw you the other day, mine's red, with a tire on top( for a few more days) Where do you work? I take the bus everyday to school, so I don't have to drive the xj much, but after school there's always errands. Yeah, that was my main concern, is smog legalities, and if it's legal in general. But you haven't had any problems huh? What muffler'd you go with? Thanks Sean

you can get a dynomax mandrel bent 2.5" tailpipe for about $40 or get the rusty's exh about the same cost with a muffler. turn downs are noisy and kick up alot of dust. at some point you will probably add one anyways, save yourself some time and hassle.

Been running mine this way for 3 yrs. with no problems. I don't have any fumes entering the cab with the windows down or with the hatch open. I don't think it would effect emissions, but I don't have to get tested. JIM.

I ran it that way for away, the only problem is it puts alot of pressure on your header and t/c cross member mount, those being the only tow things holding you exhaust. And it might lead to manifold cracking.

I use the hanger right before the rear axle on mine. No added stress. I have the turn down cocked to the right a little, so no problems with the pinion seal. JIM.

This is how I fixed mine after the second manifold cracked.

Awesome, thanks guys. I want to get rid of the tail section, plus add a little grunt to my 4.0. It's too quite w/factory exhaust setup, IMO. Now i just have to confirm legalities here in Federal Way. Thanks to all for your input.
