I have my engine out for a rebuild. I am looking to add more power. I did a search but the posts were mostly geared towards rock crawling power. My XJ spends most it's time on the street only occasionaly going off road. What do you recomend for me? I definitly want to upgrade the cam, any recomendations?

Well you didn't say what year or what motor you have so I'll base this on a 4.0 and what it comes down to is how much you want to spend and what shape you motor is actualy in. A great way to get power from the 4.0 is to stroke it.Acuarte sells complete kits that are top notch and work great. If you on a tighter buget I'd get a clifford cam for it a header and a better airfilter set up. There are other things you can do such as head work or swaping heads completely (if you have a renix) and TB mods. Its all just basic hot rodding more air in + more air out= more power.

The engine is a 4.0. It was given to me by a freind. Not sure what year it is. Is there and easy way to tell between renix and HO?

to tell what year engine you have is to find the casting number on the block and call the dealer with that number to get the year. I would go with the header, bored out throttle body, cat-back exhaust, open filter system. Rocker arms up grade, Jet chip if your block is 93 or newer. High temp thermostat, and housing from Turbo City. 97' or newer electric fan, 3 row radiator. Hi Flow injectors. Try Hesco or Accurate Machine for parts, they sale everything to set of a 4.0 with what ever power numbers you want. You could have a stroker kit, and go full bore and have something like 340hp and 360flb. if you got the money.

To tell between the renix and the HO simply find the number on the head. If the number is 686 then it's a Renix. If it's number 119,120, or 0630 then it's an HO.
