Egypt??

Kinda sounds like these "Pro-stability" people are likely the plainclothes cops that are trying to start fights and make the ones that want reforms look bad. Apparently they've also been attacking foreign news media, Anderson Cooper's news crew had the crap beat outta them and other CNN reporters have been reporting attacks as well not related to the above ass kicking. Apparently there were reports that some of the injured looters were plainclothes or out of uniform cops as well too.

I think if the government had started negotiating early last week there might have been a chance at a peaceful change of power. Not now. This could have far reaching implications for the entire region and the world. I hope we can handle it.

I take everything I read with a grain of salt. I know there is a group pushing for a caliphate, but I'm not sure if that is what is wanted by the majority of Muslims. I do know that our economy (and much of the world's) is in a very precarious position. It wouldn't take much to push it over the brink.

Well, I have to say that I am in agreement with them on one thing: currency based on the gold standard. That's pretty much right where our views diverge, though.

My opinion:

We're a bunch of pu*sies for not helping the Egyptian people because we like having a puppet dictator in our pocket over there.

We've been in Irag and Afghanistan for what, nearly a decade, trying to "win the hearts and minds" of those people and bring them democracy. We've failed miserably because they didn't ask or want our help.

Here you've got a mostly educated populace that WANTS democracy in the worst way, the movement has asked for our support and we've walked the diplomatic BS line.

Personally I think we should tell the standing government that the people are getting democracy, and that we should extend the offer of our support to all of the other Arab peoples that wish to depose their dictators and have a functioning democracy.

It might plunge the entire region into chaos, it might not, but aren't we a nation that was built on the principles that everyone deserves freedom and democracy? Those people deserve a shot.

The reason why they are playing the diplomatic line is because we have to work with whoever comes out on top in this mess and it is still not for certain that Mubarak or his organization is going anywhere.

I disagree. I believe we aren't doing anything because the US has become irrevelant in the middle east.

They would if we told them they were, and if we helped the Egyptian people kick out their dictator wouldn't we have a stronger relationship with that country?

All I'm saying is that we are a country that beats our chest about helping other people get their freedoms and their democracy, but then we're given a golden opportunity to do just that, and effect real change in the region, and we totally pussed out. I'm tired of our country being hypocritical.
We spend too much money there to be irrelevant.

Sad isn't it.

This link has been posted on other threads before but it is pretty interesting given what's going on.

We can spend plenty of cash but it is readily apparent that no one there is listening to what the US says. That fact not only makes us irrevelant but foolish also.
