ok i got a 1997 for pretty cheap and its a super solid jeep and i have deduced that the wiring is all messed up and was wondering if i can completely swap out the ECU and engine harnedd from a 98+?

Except for the fact that they are not the same.
There is no physical reason you cannot swap all the newer wires into the older Cherokee. You may run into incompatible connectors for some senors or dashboard readouts. Having the Factory Service Manual for both model years is highly recommended.

if i ditch my effed up 97 harness and ECU and get a 98 ECU AND harness would that work? i dont see why it would if i am doind ECU AND harness

So its a go? As far as I know 97 and 98 are identical except for the gypsy ass 97 wiring

you're going to run into issues plugging the transmission wiring harness into the engine wiring harness, along with assorted similar issues. What do you think is wrong with you harness and ECU?
