Easy disc brake question.

I found a strange wear on the ears that the pads slip into (I know there has to be a proper name) this afternoon, and I guess I'm just wondering if anybody's seen this before and what I can do with it? I'm not sure if the rear pad wasn't seated correctly last time brakes were changed (I didn't do them last time) or if there are other issues at work here. For what it's worth, my caliper and mounting bolts are fine.

How detrimental will this be to the life of my brakes, and more importantly, my braking in general?

weld them up, grind them smooth & your golden. Very commen prob.

I've seen this on a lot of xj's and TJ's, it will cause the pads to ware uneven because the ears on the pad get stuck in the groove. I'v "seen" (but never done myself) people weld a beed in the groove and grind it flush with the rest of the knuckle.

I had it done. Unfortunately it means removing the knuckle which also means you have to replace the ball joints, unless you can weld it and grind it yourself while it is mounted.
One benefit of welding it is that the knuckle is cast steel and the weld will be very hard and it will not wear again so fast.

BS,you dont have to remove anything to weld & grind, we do it all the time.

So, you go to a weld shop and the shop people jack it up, remove the wheel and the caliper, weld and grind the knuckle and then put everything back?
I don't know anybody who will do that.

Go to the store buy a case of beer and then start posting on NAXJA to see if anyone in your area will bring there welder over and do it at your house for a couple of brewskis.

So, how do you do it all the time without having to remove anything?
I would really like to know because I have to do it on my other XJ.

All you need to remove is the caliper and the rotor.

Okay, I'm no welder, but I do have a 100v flux core here. Would I have to worry about heat there? There's really not a whole lot of meat to those tabs, and the last thing I need to do is warp one of them and totally bung up my braking ability.

All your realy doing is a couple of tacks in the hole your not laying a fat bead across the entire surface. If one tack dosn't fill it let it cool and do another.

I think jb is usable. At least id use it anyways. Whats the worst that could happen?

I would say you could use it if you are in a climate where it will fully cure or you do it inside. Just make sure to let it fully cure (24 hrs +???)

last time I bough brake pads they came with thin metal thingies that cliped over the caliper bracket and you'd mount your pads into/onto those. No need for welding or jb weld or anything complicated like that.

Anybody know what brand of pads might come with "metal thingies" My Expedition has them mounted to the knuckle. They are made of stainless steel and don't wear much and the pad can slide on them easily.

Wow...

since this got bumped I might as well chime back in that I did sack up and fix this myself. I got to break out the welder and angle grinder which was fun. The hardest part was getting a good groud on the knuckle.
