Whats the easiest way to pull the pitman arm off? I know you gotta break the nut. Ive got the socket and a big cheater bar to help do that. But what about pulling the pitman arm off?

You can rent the Pitman Arm Puller from Reilly's or Auto Zone for like $5 or so. I think it is free if you buy something. I removed mine with the tool and an air-impact.

Rather easy once you have the right tools.

Good luck.

Used one from I rented from O'Reilly's on mine. It came off with no probems and I didn't need to beat on it or use an impact. They will sell you the same puller for under twenty bucks.

Some are tougher than others. It is good to learn all the tricks you can.

FYI, the pitman arm pullers are easy to break.

Friend of mine broke four of them trying to get a pitman arm off. Granted he didnt really know what he was doing, so that might have had something to do with it.

Like everything else, use some PB Blaster. Put the tool on, snug it up, and hit the side of the pitman arm lightly with a hammer. Tighten tool again, hit arm with hammer. Repeat until it comes off.
Be careful, you dont need the puller to get it all the way off. About half way through you might be able to get it off with just your hands. I dont want you dropping the puller and pitman arm on your face.

Thats exactly how I do it. If you can, start soaking that thing with PB a couple days before hand.

Don't listen to him, make sure you have your face right under the thing the entire time. :firedevil

I've also broken four of them... soaked it for days with pb, and even used the torch, be careful though if you use heat, you can easily ruin the seals in your box. I did ut as a last resort. But I've also had one off in 20 min, so sometimes you get lucky sometimes not. Just be patient and use these suggested methods.

1)few days/a week before soak with PBlaster lightly tapping it w/a hammer. do this multiple times before removal
2)Remove nut
3)resoak w/ PB
4)on every rotation(give or take) of the pitman arm puller bolt hit the pitman arm with a hammer.

frank's tap tap trick is the money... whether with a rented puller or a $5 cheapy.
