I have a job oppurtunity in Durango. Anyone have any insights on the area? I know Durango itself is very expensive to buy a home in but what about outlying areas?
You can look in the Aztec/Farmington area which is about 45/60 minute commute depending on weather or between Durango and Pagosa Springs which is about the same commute. The views are worth the drive, I currently drive from Durango to Pagosa 4 days a week and enjoy driving there. In town you can rent a place for a decent price, I pay $1000 for a 5bdrm house, check out www.durangoherald.com for houses to buy or rent.
We looked at commuting to Durango from Bayfield before we settled on Woodland Park. Also...I really wanted to live up at Vallecito (pronounced Veyecito) Reservoir. Although it's mostly a summer home community, there are people that live there year-round. I remember the places being smallish (fine for the 2 of us) and in need of a bit of work (like insulation). The scenery was silly. We still talk about living down there at some point but that damn Ft. Lewis College makes it real tough for ousiders to get into the Durango school system.
Let me know if you need any info about Aztec/Farmington. I live in between the two and it takes me right around 45 min. to get to Durango so if you got a place north of Aztec it might cut 10-15 minutes off of the drive. I know Durango is kinda expensive to buy, not sure about rentals.
Thanks everybody. Going up there Friday for a face to face. If everything pans out I will be moving the beginning of March. I will probably rent for a while so I can look around and decide where I want to end up. Plus I need to sell my house in ABQ first.
After speaking with some friends of friends who live there, and some realestate people, we decided not to go. It is just too expensive to live there. The pay I was offered was good but the chances of my wife getting a job were slim. She is a teacher of the gifted (little brainiacs) and that is pretty much sewn up there for the forseeable future. Thanks for the help!
