Driving without trackbar?

Long thread short: Track bars are absolutely needed. Sway bars are not absolutely needed but they are best connected for the street and disconnected for the trail.

Well today I asked my buddy to prove it; that he was driving without a trackbar, and he did. His neighbor now owns the jeep he used to have and let him drive it. It drove fine except the steering was weird as hell but he did it. Didn't go above 50 mph though.

the axle needs the tracbar, like the axle needs the driveshaft...

like a motor without oil, things will get ugly, fast!

Note to self... avoid Murietta......

Now, did you just call your buddy and say "hey prove it" and then he went out and drove it, without you seeing anything?

Or did you actually see it, or were there for the test drive? Because if you weren't, that proves absolutely nothing, as its still his word.

Tell him to get pictures. Then show us.

It is not impossiable to drive without a TB. I have had to limp home with a broken heim on mine before. It was only a mile or so and I never got it over 45, hell I dont think I ever got over 30. Handling was terriable and had a huge turning radius. :) It however is not recomended.

keyword = broken, not non-existant.

I couldn't even turn my tires on pavement at 30 PSI without a trackbar. The body would just move.

I am going to go with...

He doesn't know the difference between "sway bar" and "track bar"

X2. I too have tried turning without a trackbar, just moved the body...nothing else.

i can drive with a flat tire but i wouldnt. just because it can be done doesnt mean it should be done.

"he did but the steering weird". so does that mean you should drive without the track bar or just that it can be done?

driving an xj (4-link suspension) without a trackbar means you dont have a basic understanding of how the suspension/steering works. not all suspensions have a trackbar, but not all suspensions are a 4-link.

Yes I was there, Yes I know what a track bar is, and Yes the sway bar was still connected. I am not saying you should drive without the track bar just that it is possible. As most of you have said the turning radius was a lot larger than normal and also, driving down a road with slight curves was hell. But it was done

The sway bar was probably the only thing keeping it on the road. Disconnect the sway bar then try driving with out the track bar... or better yet have him make a sharp turn with out the track bar and see what breaks first.

so basically you know what a track bar is and what its function is and you asked a question whether an xj can be driven without one? driven down the road a mile or 2 is different than driving it every day as your daily driver.

OF course you can drive a few miles without the track bar, its only until one of the control arm mounts rip off the axle or frame does it become a problom.

now tell your friend to leave it disconnected for one month and put some highway and local driving miles on it. let us know how it does after a couple thousand miles.

Was just wondering, does anyone on here drive without a track bar? My buddy said he used to drive without it on his heep.

daily driven? or just around the block

of course its possible. anything is possible. this thread is just plain stupid if you know the purpose of the trackbar.

This is the dumbest thread I’ve ever wasted my time with, why would someone take a track bar off to promote articulation and leave the sway bar on. I won’t even get into the asinine logic of what negates what in this. The jeep WON’T steer w/out a t-bar, body roll only.
I don’t believe you, slap your friend for me and leave your t-bar on.

this thread is stupid

i can see a moron doing it, just to say he did.

with shortarms with some stiff bushings in there and relatively small tires i bet he could drive it on the street like a grandma taking his time, taking the corners wide and whatnot.

but put larger tires on it or some flexible control arms and the body will move side to side more than the tires.

I cant even jack up on my axle with no trackbar without the whole front diff trying to slide out from under the jeep....i could never imagine trying to drive it.
