Doorless?

are there any laws about cruising around with no doors here?

obviously i need to figure out side mirrors, but aside from that,

not saying it's legal.. but i did it for a while. xD nah, in NC as long as you have a drive side mirror that you can see 200Ft behind you and stays in place your good.:eeks1:

you're good in tn. you can get those little convex sticky mirrors and just stick 'em to the dash near your knees. i got pulled over and had those, and the cop just said ok, and let me go. put one on either side, ya know. it'll cost ya maybe $10 and it's easy.

In NC you have to have two functioning mirrors to pass inspection, it can be any combination between side mirrors and rear view.

TECHNICALLY i believe its illegal for any vehicle to drive without doors or a hood unless it was equipped with removable parts from the factory BUT other than that i am understanding that if you have mirrors they dont care...

I called the sheriff's office here in ga and they specifically told me that it was legal to run with no hood as long as the head lights were still functional; and I am 99% sure you can go doorless if you have side mirrors.

I believe that is incorrect. Matter of fact I would challange you to produce the Federal or State statute that says so. It is basically the Federal transportation department that set this rule IIRC. As long as you have 2 working mirrors you are fine. You can get a mirror that will bolt on the a-pillar or front fender at an auto parts store.

I took a mirror off an s-10 and stuck a threaded rod in it welded it together, stick it in the hinge left on the frame and put two nuts on it. One nut sets the height of the mirror the other just tightens it up. I did this so mine is removable I didn't like the look of having a third mirror on the a-pillar when I have the doors on.

Before I chopped the body off on mine I drove around doorless for quite a while with only the rear view mirror on the windshield. Never had any problems with cops even giving me a second look.

NC Mirror Req

In NC- you heed a driver side-view mirror and windshhield mounted mirrorfor an XJ

NC mirror rules:

19A NCAC 03D .0540 MIRRORS
1. Mirrors shall not be approved if:
(a) Loosely mounted.
(b) Forward vision of the device is obstructed by mirror assembly.
(c) They do not provide a clear view of the highway to the rear.
(d) Cracked, broken, have sharp edges or cannot be cleaned such that
rear vision is not obscured.
(e) They are very difficult to adjust or they will not maintain a set
adjustment.
(f) Bus, truck or truck-tractor with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more
is not equipped with a rear view mirror on each side.
(g) Vehicles manufactured, assembled, or first sold after January 1,
1966 are not equipped with outside rear view mirrors on the driver’s
side.
(h) All vehicles must have driver side outside mirror and inside rear
view mirror with the exception of a truck. A truck must have both
driver and passenger outside mirrors or driver side and rear inside
mirror.

i've got a couple wheelchair brackets that i'm going to be sticking mirrors on.

they're a really cool candy/metallic blue.

i'm just going to make them slip into the hinge hole as jamescad did.

i have searched the internet over, from police forums, to jeep forums, to law websites, to the TN state law on michie.com and even called the local sheriff's office, i have yet to find the law that states what i said BUT every officer that isnt one of those "i'd pull you over no matter what vehicle you had with no doors" said what i said OR said that as long as you have side mirrors, a rear view mirror and your seatbelt on that they wouldnt write you up/get written up...

so the question is still unanswered but i want to get to the bottom of it.... local guy said i should contact the manufacturer...

as far as i know no one has ever gotten a straight lawful answer...

What kinda ticket do they give you for no doors? a fix it ticket? if so put your doors on and go down to the sheriffs office fixed done, no more ticket.

I have a Jeep Cherokee and was considering making the doors removable
(similar to a Jeep Wrangler). What are the rules for this? Can you point
me to the applicable state regulation for this?

And received this:

There is no State law that regulates doors on vehicles. You are permitted to do this.
