Doin' the move

I plan on hitting the junkyard before driving out to AZ to pull some parts that I feel like would be good to have back-ups of in case of breakdown on the way out.

I won't be towing or hauling anything, so that should be a lot less stress on the whole truck.

  1. AC Compressor (what's the newest year that will fit an 88 RENIX?)
  2. Alternator (what's the newest year that will fit an 88 RENIX?)
  3. New belt
  4. Sensors - Just replaced them all with new (I have the old ones I replaced, just in case)
  5. Water Pump
Anything else you think would be good for a hoopty truck in OK condition?

Will I need to plug up the ports on the compressor to prevent rust or anything?

Wouldn't be a bad idea. Not so much for rust, just to eliminate the possibility of dirt getting in there.

Are you running the AC, or are you picking up a new compressor incase the bearings lock up on your current one?

[/LIST]

I duct taped the one I have on the shelf.

I plan on bringing a bunch of tools with me; sockets, wrenches, etc.

I repacked the front bearings already. Haven't done anything with the rear.

The AC works fine, I just wanted a backup in case it seized. Plus, I bet compressors are cheaper/easier to find here than AZ.

True.

Waterpump would be on the top of my list. Tho, I'm slightly biased. I have 3 bad water pumps laying in the floor of my shop right now. 2 failed in the same weekend on different Jeeps.

You'd think I was doing something wrong...

Well... one of the ones I pulled was locked down completely. One had badly worn blades and the other one the bearings felt 'rough'.

I'd find a wrecked XJ and get it off of it. It had to be running if they wrecked it. :)

I'd grab a fuel pump and a starter too.

Spare idler pulley would be good to have as well.

This! Ed's locked up halfway up the mountain at the crawl last year and luckily, I had one! The idler is so cheap that Id just buy one to keep in the toolbox.

Yeah like 3 or 4 people went through idler's...or maybe it was 2 people that went through 2 or so each. I just remember idler's being a problem last year lol.

I now carry one as a spare because of that trip :D

I replaced mine right before the crawl, hope to get my spare back in July..........Ed! :)

If you haven't fixed/replaced your neutral safety switch keep that one in mind.

That pain in the ass will leave you sitting, same with the ignition switch on the column. Mine started to act up when I stopped to eat in Kansas.

Put in Neutral start jeep travel on.... Mine is grounded anyway. LOL!

Idler pulley is a must have. I keep two in my box.

Alright, I'll make sure to have a spare idler pulley.

What years alternators/ac compressors fit on 88 RENIXs? Will it be limited to RENIX rigs?

Yes. The Renix attach horizontal and the other attach vertical.

You'll want to seal the ac compressor for dirt and moisture...
Other than what has been mentioned, in addition normal trail spares, i cant think of anything else to add... Maybe extra fluids...

Good luck with trip!
