Does Shell Rotella T still have ZDDP??

I've changed a Crown Vic with 105k, Mark VIII with 128k, Escort with 110k over to synthetic with absolutely no change in oil consumption or leakage. And it was Mobil 1 0W-30.

I think mine was a coincidence... not blaming the change to synthetic for the leaks... especially since XJs are known for leaks coming from the RMS, Oil Filter Housing, Valve Cover and other known sources.

I simply don't like changing stuff like this when anything can tip the scale...

On the bright side, I have really good oil pressure 30-50psi (especially since I ditched the Fram)... and burns the same quart of oil between changes since it was new.

It's close to turning 170K miles... the motor has never had surgery.

.

VR1 isn't a synthetic.

I only have the numbers for the Amsoil products with good levels of phosphorus and zinc.
Amsoil AMO 10w-40 has 1265 ppm phosphorus and 1378 ppm zinc
Amsoil ARO 20w-50 has 1266 phosphorus and 1379 zinc
Amsoil HDD Serioes 3000 5w-30 diesel oil has 1266 phosphorus and 1379 zinc
Amsoil TRO 20w-50 Racing oil has 1235 phosphorus and 1370 Zinc

I just got off the phone with a oil tech at Valvoline, he said that the VR1 has 1400 PPM of ZDDP while all the other oils they offer are standard with 830PPM. Wouldn't 830PPM be pretty sufficient? My brain hurts lol... Maybe i'll just stick with the max life...

You're talking about initial engine break in correct? I was dead set on running the synthetic rotella 5-40 but all this talk of hurting the cats worry me since I was lucky enough to get three cats on this xj.

I ran Joe Gibbs break in oil for the cam break in on my stroker. I rather run a higher level of ZDDP on my engine to protect it than a lower level to protect the cat. Besides we have been using higher ZDDP content motor oils for how long with cats? I don't think premature cat failure while using those oils was that significant.

mobil do an ESP formula in 5w 30 which has 800 odd and is aimed at protecting your cat. I dont think mobil do a more expensive oil. But i too wouldnt worry too much about the cat or the emissions. Id just look at protecting the engine. And werent cats designed to last the life of the vehicle many years ago when oils had higher levels of zddp?

Yeah, thats my thinking.

Cats were only designed for a minimum of 50,000 miles in older vehicles, but typically lasted a lot longer.

Cat has little use if the engine blows up.
