Dodge Dakota??

mgt... you are providing a link to a picture that is available within the album after you login... you can't use those to post on the forums as they don't work...

i'm not doggin the 5.2. it's a good motor. but why go with the older technology? if you get the 4.7 then buy the HO 4.7L parts that they put on the HO jeeps, you're set. the 5.2 is not as strong as the 4.7 period.

as long as we're posting pics, here's a pic of my baby...

ironically, after i sold it, i got an xj just like the one was wheelin' with in this album. :D

i'm not denying that the 4.7 is stronger just that the 5.2 is a good motor. 4.7 and 5.2 both have the same hp and torque don,t they ?

A four door F-150 will make a much better tow rig than a Dakota.

CRASH

CRASH,
I think he's looking for something to tow with .

Not one more thing that needs towing. ;)

You guys are all missing the point. The 5.2L produces more torque at low RPM than the 4.7L. For towing, low-end torque is more useful than high-end.

And it doesn't make a whole lot of difference if the cam is in the block or two cams are in the heads at 2500 RPM. Overhead cams start to make a difference above 5000 RPM.

The 4.7L is a nice passenger car engine, and when you get it wound up over 3000 or maybe 3500 RPM is goes like a scalded cat -- but it does NOT produce usable low-end pulling power anything near the older 5.2L.

And I say that as someone who doesn't even much like the Mopar 5.2L engine. But I like the 4.7L even less.

Eagle... have you towed with the 4.7?? I did.... I had to test the electrical brake controller I hooked up on my folks' Durango and I took their 3000lbs + trailer out.... and I had no complaints whatsoever :D

I can't compare to the 5.2.... but the 4.7 has performed real nice. I have even took it to where there were couple somewhat step climbs (I had to see how it behaves coming back down LOL)

Yes. I owned a '99 WJ, remember? My comments are based on my first-hand experience.

1/2 ton trucks these days tow as much as 3/4 ton trucks of the 70's and 80's.

I agree. Back in the stupid days of 15 or so years ago, I towed a 21' aquasort center console with a 200 johnson 200 miles on the bumper of a dodge dakota with a 3.9 v6 with no problem whatsoever. It was a bear behind me but with the o/d locked out, was still able to pull at highway speeds of @65.

Also when I bought my son cherokee 3 years ago(ok I'm still stupid) I towed the cherokee on a tandem axle car trailer with my 99 cherokee 4.0 150 miles with no problem.

However now I say,"If you're doing substantial towing, get a truck designed for it". But it can be done with less.

I had a 99 Dodge Dakota ext cab 4x4 with the 5.2. That thing was crazy fast for me around town and would do some amazing burnouts in the street...all stock except for an open element air filter and a 2 chamber flowmaster muffler. It had 3.55 gears and was rated somewhere around 6000 pounds to tow. I towed my 6600 pound trailer (4600 jeep and 2000 car trailer) several times with it. It did ok, however the truck just didnt weigh enough for what it was towing and the trailer pushed my jeep around quite a bit. Plus the fact that the drivetrain is essentially light duty stuff and really only as good as the stock stuff on my Jeep...I started looking for something that was built a little better to tow. Also I had to run premium in the dakota as the spark knock was incredible running 87 gas while towing and it burnt nearly a quart of oil with every fill up while towing. It only had 40k miles on it, but I think it already needed an intake gasket replaced....

So I got rid of the dakota and now tow with a 2000 f150 ext cab 4x4 with the 5.4, this truck towes awesome, does great around town, gets 18+ mpg on the hwy and nicely towed my junk on the trailer to moab in august with no complaints. I dont do enough towing to justify a diesel and this 5.4 in the f150 does a great job for my needs.

and damn I love the look of the new 2004 f150s.....

I agree with macgycr, it just does not heavy enough front axles are weak and brakes too small. It is still fun to drive around town.
