Do we need to be street legal for OHV?

When we were all last at the Hammers in Johnson Valley I noticed many of the trail rigs were not street legal. Since I trailer my Jeep and only run it off road I just canceled the insurance and contacted DMV for a Non-Op status. My question is: Do I need to get some kind of Off Road sticker (Green Sticker) or what? Has anybody been hassled? Can I just run with my expired tags?

I believe you need to be registered for the street, or have a green sticker

My Jeep is currently street legal and licensed. My issue is I just retired and money is tight so I don't want to have to pay for insurance on it. There is no way to keep current tags without maintaining insurance so I non op'd it.
It sounds like the letter of the law says it needs to be licensed but I know the club has a number of rock buggy's that didn't have current tags.
Can I get a green sticker for it?

ok if all you do is run the hammers and other blm land you can get away with a green sticker, touch just about any trail in big bear and youll need street regestration, 90% of the green sticker trails you cant get to or run for long before you hit a street vehicle road/trail. Look into offroad or rec vehicle insurance its pretty afordable, I had a ram charger that was insured for less than 2000 miles a year for about $200 and they never checked my milage, the green sticker process sucks and is not reversable so I dont sugest you go that route unless you have to

Talk to your insurance company. I pay $50.82 per year for insurance on my truck, as it see's only about 1,200 paved miles per year.

.. but it still lets me keep the multicar discount on my jeep.

Thanks guys, that is what I wanted to know. Insurance is $260 a year which is not a big deal but since I never drive it on the street it seems silly. I guess maybe I should just keep it registered and insured!!

FOLLOW UP. I can't be the only one with this question so here is what I found out. Taking the CJ5 Trail rig off my policy saved a whole $18. Apparently going from 4 to 3 vehicles lost some multicar discount resulting in the others going up.
So it is back on and I'll stay street legal. In the process they re-evaluated my vehicles and rated everything higher so the $18 will now cost me $150. Nobody at Auto Club could explain all this to me but since I had already paid my premium I'm just going to ride it out for the next year but at renewal time you can bet I'll go shopping. AARP seems to want my business...we'll see!

When it comes to insurance shopping time, check out 'SafeCo' insurance. They beat everyone else hands down, my toys are insured at about $50 each per year, as they only see a couple thousand pavement miles. My fam used to be in the auto body biz, and they were always good to work with. They wanted shops to use quality parts, and were always fast to pay. From that side of the industry, they are second only to AAA.
