I am regearing my jeep next weekend, and i have always thought that with 33 inch tires, you should get 4.56's. However, when i called the shop they said that 4.56 would make my rpm's something like 4000 on the highway, and that i should get 4.10's. Please let me know what you guys think i should get??

Also, i saw a thread once with a link on how to find out how many teeth you need on your speedo gear to make it accurate...anyone know it?

What is your stock gear ratio?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that:
I6 + Manual tranny = 3.07
I6 + Auto tranny = 3.55
I4 = 4.10

V6 or other earlier crap = ?

Your starting ratio will affect the change you feel with different ending ratios...

I should also add that there are other factors to consider when gearing down. The Cherokee comes stock with gears that are too high. At least this is a common consensus, so having lower gears can be a power benefit, especially offroad. As well, if you are adding extra weight by way of skids, armor, larger tires and wheels, etc, you may want the lower gears anyway just to help pull all of that crap. Others will probably chime in with other consideration. I know for myself, if I were running 33's I'd probably only go to 4.10's considering mine isn't wheeled that often, but on the other hand, if you even remotely think you might go bigger, then go with the lower gears...

Tell them to suck it . . . I get about 2250 RPMs at 65 mph with 4.56s and 33s (actually 32.8" tires).

33s and 4.56s (with a 39 tooth gear) kicks ass with an 8.25. Some prefer 4.88s (which you can't get for the 8.25 axle). 4.10s won't kill you, but what kind of wheelin' / drivin' do you do? If you want a stock feel, get 4.56s for 33s IMO.

4.56's should be fine for 33's as long as you have an overdrive.

I am Running 4:56's in my 96 XJ w/ 33's and I am about 2500 RPM's doing roughly 65mph. My Xj is also a Manual but I dont think it would be that drastic of a difference.

I'm gonna go with no they don't no what they are talkin about. Of course it all depends on if you have an automatic or manual tranny. But here is the deal; On my jeep I have 32" tires with 4.56 gears and automatic. 3000 rpm for me is 80mph. A bigger tire with that same combo would make that rpm number go down a little bit. A manual trans with that combo would make the number go up a little. So even if you had the 5 speed I would say you would have a hard time hitting 4 grand without getting speeding tickets or wrecking or somthing.

Smart with gear setting and smart with rpm calculations involves two different parts of the brain.
I wouldn't necessarily discount their skills just because of that.
If the price is good......
I'm that way.
I can set any gears, but don't ask me how high your r's are gonna be when I'm done.
I may even tell you, "5000rpm at 60mph."

Thanks for the help on the gears and speedo thing, btw its a 96 with an auto tranny and I6

and by the way i didnt ask what my rpms were gunna be, i told them i wanted 4.56 gears and they immediately told me that it was too much for 33's, and that my rpms would be 4000 or somethin on the highway

4.10's would be fine if the 33's weighed the same amount as the stock tires, but they are substantially heavier so you need that extra little bit of gear to get those bigger and wider tires moving. you sacrifice a few hundrew RPM, but you'll be praising them the first time you put it on the trail.

There was one question earlier that is very important, "what kind of off-roading do you plan to do." I might also throw in there, is this your daily driver and do you want to have good off-good capability, but not want to get 8 MPG, either?

I'm not saying you'll get 8 MPG, but if you listen to everyone on this board, they'd have you convinced if they made 888 gears you should get them!

If you plan on off-roading ALOT on SLOW, high-traction rocks you may be happy with the 456s. If you do more woods or mud trails, less traction areas, you may be better off with the 410s.

Just one man's opinion. Don't buy the "always-higher-is-better" concept --

My .02c: 4.56's and 33's are a definite go. When I first went to BF 31inchers, installed 4.10's and an ARB in my rear D44. The results were ok. Then I went to 33's; the 4.10's were to high! No power (4.0 six) on the highway. So, I switched to 4.56's--VERY expensive because the ARB case switch is at 4.10--so had to change out the ARB, too.
The point is, for decent highway performance with 33 in tires, I think 4.56 are minimum. If you go off road, you won't be happy with craw ratio the 4.10's give you. And if you go off road, you need a locker at least in the rear. So plan ahead regarding locker needs and gear ratio cut-offs.

The ARB RD06(Gen1) and the new RD116(Gen2) both are 3.92-up cases.

Real life versus goofy baseless opinion - my 4.0/AW4 runnning 33s and 4.88s turns a shade under 3000 at 75 mph with the correct speedo gear. I love it.

I don't have the speedo fixed yet, but according to my GPS I'm turning at ~2500 in OD (AW4) at 65 mph with 4:86 and 33" tires (33").

33's and 3:55 sucked, 33's with 4:10 would suck even more because at least the 3:55s came stock with the Jeep at no extra cost. I'm glad I went with the lower gears, now all I need to do is get it out on the trail to be really happy.

Huh?

:laugh3:

if in doubt, gear higher. i would have gone to 5.13's if i could have. 4.88's and 36's - i'm turning 2000 RPM at 60 MPH. works well!
