Discolored trim, how to fix?

Today a co-worker asked me if I knew how to bring back the black in the trim on his XJ and TJ. As you guys may know the black molded plastic starts to turn grey with age. He mentioned a story that using a heat gun will do the trick.
Anyone know the truth to this, or any other solution?

Thanks,

well I have heard from "back to black" from mother's, "black magic", to peanut butter... all of those are a temporary solution, dunno about a heat gun, heard of it too but for the green discoloration, but not for the gray ashy looking trim

I just bought a can of Krylon called "Fusion" for plastic, requires no sanding or primer, but I suggest you to throughly clean the trim by washing with car soap and maybe some lacquer thinner or mineral spirits to clean any grease/oils before spraying... just waiting for a calm day to spray these past week has been really windy in Florida

The back to black stuff works pretty decent, as well as the heat gun trick. The only bad part of using the heat gun is that it is really hard to get all the black to look uniform in color but if you do that and then use the back to black, it will look better.

Try some plain old motor oil, we used some mobil-1 drippings I collect in a 5 quart bottle from the drippings from the one quart bottles. Seemed to work pretty well on my sons TJ, not sure how long it lasts as he gets so much mud on it between washings I never see it clean for more than a couple of hours. My XJ's are starting to 'turn', might just wipe some on and see what happens, after all the plastic is petro based so oil should work pretty well. A detailer they interviewed in LA uses motor oil on the tires too, soaks in and looks good for more than a few days...

I manage the detail department at the dealership i work at.WE use a product like back to black i personally use meguires trim restore it works pretty good.
You do need to maintain it a litte but its better than the grey look.

OK, I just did the mobil-1 wipe down and took some pics, will see how if fares over the next couple of weeks with a normal wash/sun/rain cycle... It sure soaked in fast though but left them a nice shiny black like when they were new. Did not take much either, used the clean drippings from my sons oil change that he's doing now on his TJ...

I've used the Mothers Back To Black. It works very well. And it's easy to use, just rub it on. I did have to do it agin in about six months but that was here in Nevada were we have intense sun almost every day of the summer.

Anybody ever try black shoe polish? I figure it's worth a shot. Looks nice on my loafers...
