Differences in CPS?

I have a 96 4.0 AW4, with a build date of May 96.
It does have an OBD II connector. According to
my parts searching, the 94,95, and 96 use the
same part number. I'm a bit confused because some
of them say "exc OBD II", and mine does have OBD II.

Is there a difference between the manual and auto
transmission CPS sensors?

Also what about the quality of the Crown brand vs
MoPar?

Crown parts kind of suck a lot.

Get Bosch or Mopar.

OP posted about a 96.

I checked, and if you go jeep, 1996, it does list CHEROKEE XJ.

95 can be same as 94 or 96.

Mine is a 95, and the dealer (by vin) kept giving me one that had the 94 connector on it. He removed the vin filter and it showed him the '96 part number and that one worked.

Now that's interesting. I knew 96 was a transition year
but apparently the 95 is too, with some parts...?

I found a MoPar CPS on Amazon that looked like mine and
ordered it. Mine has the oval connector. It was more
expensive than the Crown brand, but MoPar seems to
be preferred over the rest.

I just went through this rigamarole. Stick with a Mopar one. Mine is a 95 with the oval connector and 3 pins and paid $80 at the dealer. I also see them on the web for around $55. You most likely need P/N 56026882. They might also list 2 of them at the dealer, one for high altitude and one for normal which is the P/N I listed above.

Thanks for the link; I had been keeping up with it though.
Interesting that a faulty CPS would cause all that trouble,
and I'm glad you got it figured out.

The Amazon MoPar CPS didn't show a part number, but
it should deliver tomorrow so I'll soon know if it's correct.
My XJ was originally sold in Florida, so I doubt if it has the
high altitude sensor.

The new CPS came in today.
It's part number is Mopar 56026921 and it
has the oval connector. It's identical to and
has the same part number as the original
one. (96 XJ with build date of May 96)

Jackpot!

I was sweating this because the 1996 model
seems to be put together with a mixture of
1995 and 1997 parts...? I read somewhere that
the 96 model was the best seller of all the XJ years.
If that's true, guess they had to put them together
with whatever parts they could scrounge up, knowing
that 97 would be a whole new model...?
