Does anyone know if Jeep ever imported Diesel XJ's into the US? Looking at getting one while i am stationed here (Germany) and bringing it back. I have my eyes on a 98 4.0 right now. But if i can swag it with the wife, i want a toy as well.

I know that the older body style that had the poopy 2.1L diesel was here. There may be newer models in CA, but I havent seen any.
You could probably go online and/or contact a dmv here in the states for more info.

The short answer is no - at least, not any other than the Renault 2.1TD made from 1985 to 1988.

I'm guessing that you're looking at one with the VM 2.5TD. Good luck with getting it registered in the US; that engine was never certified for North American use. But if you do, let me know how you manage it ;)

:clap:So in short, my best bet would be to just ship the engine back to the states and do an engine swap. Thanks for the help Guys.

Just to reiterate: you may not be able to register it as a diesel once the swap is completed as the VM Motori 2.5TD was never approved for use in the US.

This may or may not be a consideration for you, but I'm mentioning it to save the potential heartbreak.

Best of luck; I'd definitely be interested in seeing one here.

if you register it in a county that only smogs once, upon initial reg, youd be good after that....

I would just register it in my home state of Florida which doesnt do any smog testing at all. And with some of the rigs people have down there i dont think it would be the strangest thing they have seen. BUT, i have 2 years to work out the details so we will see what happens.
