Dicks Divorce Causing XJ Build

thanks for the info. i found a 44 for 300obo from a 87 xj. ill keep an eye out over the next few weeks for a cheap 44 or 8.25.

and i think ivee decided on a tire. wrangler mtr with kelvar. 32x11.50x15
just get 33's

i had the coopers on my last truck. i loved them. but they are out of my price range. for this project. and the i dont wanna cut into the truck right away, so im looking at the 32's so i can run em without cutting. also, i dont wanna run a 12.50 tire. and the 33 is a 12.50.

alright. so updated parts list:

-RE 4.5 superflex from 4x4groupbuy.com. $1087 + $160 shipping and they include monotube shocks.
-goodyear mtr 32" from 4wd $784
- this bumper (http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=9309) $115
- rear hitch from 4wd $167 and then all 3 shipped for $100 and wheels/tires mounted for $50
-soft 8's from summit $184 shipped

this should complete the build besides the things i need to do for inspection.which are floors. and i think thats about it. just so yall know. rockauto.com has floors for 41 a piece for the xj. pretty affordable and like $3 shipping depending on where u are

this is it by the way haha. i forgot to post them earlier. its ugly. but it will get the job done when i get everything started. i think im gonna rattle it army green. so it will be sorta xmasy with the ref interior. or i might just put a new coat of red. i dunno. i might just leave it this way. havent decided.

if i find any 44, will it bolt up? or doest it have to be a cherokee 44 to bolt up?
it has to be an xj 44 to bolt up. around my parts the 8.25 would be easier to find and still have plenty of aftermarket support.
sorry already been answered. but fyi you can get a 33x10.50 pizza cutters FTW!

dude if your gonna play on ice and snow, goe with pizza cutters. Unless you are going to be playing in some seriously deep stuff stay narrow. the 33x12.50r15 on my xj can be a little drifty to say the least on the ice. I like my truck's tires in the icier stuff they seem to hook up better. 1 ton with 285/75r16 iirc so about 33x10.50. both run BFG allterrains.

just my 2 cents

ill be on the lookout for the xj 44 or the 8.25. ive got some time before i get my bonus. im pretty pissed too. i was supposed to get all my bonus in 3 weeks, and i was gonna pick up a buddies xk. its a 95 with a bunch of stuff. front winch bumper, winch, rear bumper, boatsides, 8.25(29 spline), ausie for the 30 up front, 33 mtz's(i think), mickey classics, ton of spare parts including aw4 and doors(half doors FTW) and axles etc. i was gonna go pick it up in a few weeks, but i dont think im gonna have the cash in time now. we'll see as thats on the table if i get my bonus in time.

as for tires. theres not many 33x10.50's out there. interco seems to make a lot of them and their on the slow for production as we all know. we'll see how things go, as i might get the 34x10.50 ltb and call it a day. just depends on which way i decide to go, as i am still going back and forth right now. im set on the 4.5 re lift from 4x4groupbuy cause they give you shocks where places like 4wd dont. but im deciding on the tires, based on the money difference. so im not sure. if i go 31's i can get everything for under 2k. if i go bigger im going over the 2k mark and its a mental block. i need to just be patient and see how much i bonus this month. if i do well, and by that i mean triple what im at now, then ill be more apt to get the bigger tires. so we'll see.

im surprised i dont see more on the marketplace forum with things for sale.

You will hate yourself if you go with 31's on a 4.5" lift. I bought my jeep with 32" A/T's and a 3" lift and decided to buy 32" M/T's because I wasn't going to lift it any higher. Like a month later I got a 4.5" lift and then the tires were too small. I'd say go with at least a 33 and trim the fenders or bumpstop.

I think the Goodyears in a 32x11.5" size is a good choice. Seems like lots of people like those tires so far in any condition (just got a set of 35's myself). They should also be very compliant on the street.

I personally hate the skinny 10.5" tires, I'd say the more contact patch the better. Especially around this area with lots of rocks, you need all the traction you can get. A guy in our club does awesome on BFG A/T's in the rocks because he has so much rubber to grip with.

There's a quote from one of my favorite movies... something like "Funny thing bout that white spot on top of chicken shit... it's still chicken shit"

Putting anything into a 35 is a waste. I know the thread has moved past this, but I just watched this movie again and felt like posting it lol. And the 35 is just so shitty that it should be reiterated.

Everybody I know who's spent the $$ for them kevlar MTRs has been extremely happy with them. Be aware though, they run a little bigger than advertised. My buddy has 42" MTRs, and our other buddy bought a set of 40" Kevlar MTRs, and the 40" Kevlars are taller than the 42" old style MTRs.
If I wasn't too much of a cheap ass to buy new tires, I'd be running 40" Kevlars on my truck... and I'm picky with my tires.

i do love the look of the mtr kevlar and i read theyre very durable. i see guys cutting sidewalls every so often when aired down low, so i like that they get good reviews for being durable. ill probably go 32 mtr and the 4.5. the jump in cost to a 33 mtr is enough to keep me from buying them right now, though i may later when i have a bonus dedicated to tires alone. im working on a budget of 2500 bucks to get the lift, wheels/tires, front bumper and rear bumper or hitch. id really like to lock either the front or rear as i have a mental stigma of open diff wheeling. i only had lsd in the ford, but i really felt it helps. i liked the idea of the rustys cause it was wheels, tires, lift, for an affordable number. i wish it wasnt crap. but then again, in this sport, you get what you pay for most of the time. and if the mtr's run a little bigger, then the 32" will be great :)

also, going with a wide tire means ill have to work on flares, cause PA is ridiculous and the cops love to pull people over for having too wide tires. so i dont wanna spend money on the flares if i dont have to.

im open to suggestions on different lifts besides the RE lift also. I know it gets great reviews for its quality, but if there are other lifts that are similar in quality but more affordable, ill be happy to look at them.

what do yall think about doing the 3.5 RE and a spacer up front? for the added inch? that would save me nearly $300 to put towards the wheels/tires

The 8.25 will take a beating, and depending on where you live (like where I am) are a 1000 times easier to find than an XJ/Comanche D44. It just has that big ugly lip on the bottom.
X2, though I can't compare durability really.

I can't walk into Sam's Pull-a-Part without seeing a 97 or later XJ with a 29 spline 8.25 under it. I still have yet to see an XJ D44 in that yard, and I have been going there since fall of 2008.

When you go... bring:
* a several-ton hydro jack, if the vehicles aren't up on stands
* a battery powered sawzall or angle grinder!!!
* regular crap, big wire cutters, wrenches etc

I've pulled an XJ axle in less than 30 minutes with those two tools, if you don't bring the good stuff, it really sucks. Cutting U-bolts is much easier than unbolting them and you should get new U-bolts anyways.
