Detroit Diesel

Looking to see who knows about 8.1L Detroit diesel, how is the power/reliability. We have a 87? GMC with a 8.1L DD and a 5spd w/ H & L . Only 27K on it but 1100hrs. Been sitting for about a yr, good/bad engine? Worth a monster tow rig build?

I know there fuel hogs. My wife's uncle has one in his Safari motor home gets about 6mpg he says. But it does probably weigh 18k or better.

Do you know if his RV had a 2 speed rear, it would make a difference in driveablity and MPG. Our F-650(26k GVW) with a cat c-7(sucks) only gets about 4-5 MPG, and our 33kgvw International wits a dt466 only gets 3-4 MPG under load according to the display on the dash. Glad I don't buy the fuel.
