DD with larger (36"+ tires) TROLLS GALORE

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

haha, yea, i think i get maybe 10mpg and i only have 31" mud terrains. no way is 20mpg possible.
i actually get better mileage TOWING my jeep behind my 22 year old 286k mile 3/4 ton van than if i drove it.

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

screw the haters, put some 42s on rims with 8" of backspacing, tuck those tires tight in, lift it 12 inches, and run the spindliest crappiest longarm lift you can find!

if you run into driveshaft vibe issues, clock the transfer case straight down.

I suggest poop pipe coil spacers and 1/8" wall box tubing leaf spacers because they are very inexpensive.

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

This is my DD. Not sure why everybody is so afraid of 37s as a DD.
Not everyone lives in TX...
6 mpg's over stock with 37's?
Bush really did XXXX up your states education. Oh

To the op, you could fix your 92 for about the same price your 38's will cost you

Dont let the Canadians win
So...stock is 11/14? I got 18 combined with 30s, getting 14 now, but I'm sure there's other issues at hand.

There's other issues at hand. You shouldn't be getting 10 on 31s unless you have parachute dragging behind you everywhere you go...:D

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

but for the type of wheeling I do, a Dana 35 has held up for two years on 33/35's.
either your not pushing your rig hard enough, or you dont really need 38s.

I'm happy with my jeep now, but I want to go bigger for my own reasons.
to score mad puzzies!?

Please save me your opinions on low COG ETC ETC. This is my rig, let me design it how I want it.
your going to do what you want to do anyway...

they answered your questions. you just didnt like the answers. using the IRO bull crap excuse of a radius arm on axles that you will have to install custom bracketry on is rediculous. im not implying you arent, but if your not confident in your ability to make a few links, how do you intend to confidently weld bracketry onto your new axles?

i still fail to see the need for tires that big.

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

I suggest asking Pirate4x4 this question - check under the General 4x4 section. They'll definitely give you better tech suggestions on how to build an XJ like this than we will.

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

What the hell, guys? He isn't building YOUR rig, he is building HIS rig. Not every Jeep is built for the rocks. If you don't like it, find a thread you can provide some positive info to. Valid as they may be, you don't need to present your concerns like a bunch of teenage dick heads

I say build it! As others have stated, your axles won't handle much more than street use with 38's. 4.88's will work, but the motor will be struggling at freeway speeds. The ball joints in the D30 front will need to be replaced frequently due to high stress and rapid wear. Also the stock brakes will suffer. I can't recommend towing or anything more than fairly mild trail use (aka gravel roads) with the setup you describe on stock axles.

Ideally, 5.38's on at least D44 axles should be in your immediate future. I'm glad to see that better brakes are on your to-do list. You apparently already know the handling/driveability limitations of a high, narrow vehicle on large tires.

I will leave you with this advice on tires - Every time I've purchased quality tires I have been happy with them. Every time I've purchased cheap tires I have regretted it in the long run.

Good luck!

Re: DD with larger (36"+ tires)

just do it go with skinnier tires tho my friends rig lasted 2 years with a welded 8.25 and an open 30 on 38.5 boggers only gernaded the 30 once. but with the boggers they would just dig so you wouldnt have to use alot of skinny pedal just do it if you dont like it just change it back :worship:

This thread is the XJ equivalent of " you'll shoot your eye out!"

well i do drive it like my mustang, that might not help. but it is seriously shitty on gas. also, i have the stock gearing, which is 3.06 or something, since i have a manual. 5th gear is pretty much useless. cant wait to swap the new gears in!
