Daystar

I just installed a Daystar budget lift kit (1.75 in. front spacers and 1 in. rear shackles) on my 92 XJ. I was wondering if I could run 31X10.5's with no or minimal rubbing. Daystar specs say you can run 30X9.50's. I intend to buy new rims as well and I was wondering if backspacing should be and issue when I obtain rims. Can anyone help me of give me some ideas on what to do here? Thanks!

Ed Stevens, NAXJA's Land Use Coordinator, did extensive testing which is written up on his personal web site. You might find the URL by searching, or drop him a PM and ask for it.

What he found is that, on stock rims, you can run 31x10.50/15 tires on a stock XJ with NO lift. The tires will rub against the lower control arms when you try to turn the steering to full lock, but the 31s will tuck up inside the fenders when the suspension compresses.

To the best of my knowledge, there are NO aftermarket rims with 5.25" backspacing, so any aftermarket rims will move the tires farther out from the vehicle centerline. That means they will NOT stuff inside the fenders, but will hit the flares. Your Daystar budget boost won't help that -- it's not enough lift to allow the wheels a lot of movement before contacting the bodywork. Your only solution would be to extend the bumpstops and significantly reduce the amount of compression ("stuff") available in your suspension travel.

Try the 31s on stock Jeep rims before you buy wheels you may be unhappy with.

X2, I went back to stock rims on the last XJ because of tire stuff issues.

If you stay with 9.50 tires, you can go up to 32" with a budget lift and 4 inch back spaced tires. Depends on how aggressive a tread you get.

If you use something like the Super Swamper TSLs in a 32x9.50 configuration, a budget lift and 4 inch back space, the knobs on the sides of the tires will thump the flares.

and if you stick with stock rims they wont hit the flares at all. but the inner fender will still need to be radiused to stuff correctly in the rear

i have a 87 four door cherokee that i just put a budget boost on. it clears 33's with little rubbing. i also trimmed the fenders (cut and roll method) and added proper bump stoping and it does fine so i think you should be just fine running 31's just trim and bump stop as needed

Ive got the same daystar kit on my 99.
No rub anywhere with 30 X 9.50's.
With the 31 x10.50's on it (stock rims), they rub on the lower c-arms and without bumpstop extenions they grab the lower corner's of the rear flairs.
BTW.... I have home made b.s. extenions on the rear.

This is with the 30's and the B.B..............

and the only non-flex pic I can find right now with the 30's and the B.B. on it............

I dont have a flex shot with the 31's, but here's what it look's like with the 31's and the B.B.....

you can see that theres not much room for stuffing but they do stuff into the top of the wheel wells.
BTW....
30's work fine with no lift also.
30's before the BB...........
