Ed Stevens,

's Land Use Coordinator, did extensive testing which is written up on his personal web site. You might find the URL by searching, or drop him a PM and ask for it.
What he found is that, on stock rims, you can run 31x10.50/15 tires on a stock XJ with NO lift. The tires will rub against the lower control arms when you try to turn the steering to full lock, but the 31s will tuck up inside the fenders when the suspension compresses.
To the best of my knowledge, there are NO aftermarket rims with 5.25" backspacing, so any aftermarket rims will move the tires farther out from the vehicle centerline. That means they will NOT stuff inside the fenders, but will hit the flares. Your Daystar budget boost won't help that -- it's not enough lift to allow the wheels a lot of movement before contacting the bodywork. Your only solution would be to extend the bumpstops and significantly reduce the amount of compression ("stuff") available in your suspension travel.
Try the 31s on stock Jeep rims before you buy wheels you may be unhappy with.
