Dashlights and taillights do not work

My ancient Haynes and Chilton as well as current POS Chilton all tell how to remove the switch. Pull shaft all way out as in turning on lights and press release button on bottom of switch body to remove shaft. Unscrew retaining nut and remove the switch. Many threads on this.
