Doing the d44 swap from the turdy 35..
We have 5" of lift on the xj from before.. Lennie has it at his shop and we just thought about the drive shaft may not work.

Has any one done a 44 swap and not changed out the drive shaft?

Dana44 out of a 87 xj
242 non sye..
drive shaft is not double cardon from the 242 to the old 35..

Too long? or too short?

the d44 is 1.5 inches closer to the tranny than the d35 is.

so the stock shaft should work if you have an auto.

if you changed to a 5spd ax15 like i did. which is 1.5 inches SHORTER than the aw4, you should use the longer drive line from a the jeep the tranny came out of.

i was at 5.5 with a d35 and aw4 pondering a driveline lengthen. when i switched to the 44 and 5spd, since both measurements were 1.5 inches it just shifted forward and i would have been able to keep using my old drive shaft but still would have needed it lengthened.

so technically if you're pondering a longer driveshaft i would just grab one from an ax15/d35 jeep. 1.5 longer drive line.

all my junk worked when i had my 98 with a 44 swapped in.... the difference is negligible itll all work

X2^^ D44 and AW4/D35 shaft at roughly 4.5"-5" and the slip yoke rides in the same place it did before the lift with the D35. Angles suck, but the shaft is fine.
