What is the proper technique for breaking in a front end gearset? I'm planning on driving 25 mins at a time, below 55 mph until I reach 100 miles, then take it easy and keep it at 55 mph or lower for a total of 500 miles. Then change the fluid.

Sound about right? Are there any other techniques anyone would like to recommend?

Seeing how its a front end application, should I be in 4x4 the whole time? Just the first 100 miles? Not necessary at all?

Thanks for any input!

Ya I drove to reno on fresh set gears from.. I don't remember from where exactly we put Casey's rig on my trailer.. but it was over 100 miles in one trip. I did stop and throw ice on the rear diff at one point.

I have heard of gear break in procedures and have done them in the past.. But real world scenario.. kinda seems unneccessary. I would still air on the side of caution and punt around town. That pattern you had was perfect.

break in the rear. the front really never sees extended periods of freeway speeds. go put wheel rubicon or something and come back and change it if you are concerned.
