D30 Deflection ?

I want to reduce as much deflection as possible with the D30. I plan on keeping this one and never running bigger than a 35" with it.

My question is, would the rock ring qualify as a solid enough dif cover to keep it all lined up, in your opinion? It's from Poison Spider. IIRC it's a 1/2" ring and 1/4" guard.
I also want to weld the truss to the pumpkin and could use a few tips.

if you're questioning it, why not just spend a few bucks and get a full cover?
get ruffstuff, it's 3/8 thick and he's a vendor here too.

Yeah, I know Dan's the man. I'm just worried about clearing my steering with the cover. But you're correct, if I'm questioning it than something needs to be done. Honestly, it's just something I've wondered about and I figured I'd ask the experts what they thought.

Any tips on welding the pumpkin? High heat low heat?

preheat, nickle stick, slow cool, full routine.

I thought that mr overkill I think is his user name did the grinder test on his dana 30 and his dana 60 and it turns out it's not needed to use a nickle rod welding method...

I swear every day someone says something differently though.

He did the test and confirmed you *DO* need to.

Then he decided not to do it when he was paid to, anyways. :/

I'm not convinced that welding to the pumpkin is either advantageous or even necessary.
If you are trussing it, you are isolating much of the twist and deflection that your axles put on the housing. Although you have not done anything to strengthen the housing I don't believe that your 35's will require it.
I'm betting that welding to the pumpkin may just cause more harm than good.

I havn't seen this mentioned very much, but the cover that will best strengthen the pumpkin is one that uses countersunk hardware. Using the countersinks is the only way for any real load to be transfered into the cover. I'm not sure of any cover's that do this other than Ruffstuff's.

I also agree that welding the truss to the pumpkin will add stiffness to the housing. Your essentially tieing in both sides of the carrier which will undoubtubly increase stiffness.

When I bought my cover for Dan and sat it next to my stock cover it was a little shorter. I was worried about steering clearing too. Go for the full cover.

what are you talking about, i have welded to the dif every truss i have ever welded!!!! if i am paid to do some thing i do it ( i am young and need the money!!! ) i take pride in my work and weld to OverKill standards!!!!!

its not hard, just watch your flow, drag with tie in weave, keep it nice and hot, use AC, be ready to spend some money if you want to practise ( Nirod ain't cheap ), get an old cast iron skillet( nice flat even surface to practise on ), enjoy the experience!!!
