D-ring tab Q's

I am in the progress of building a front bumper. I ordered a set of d-ring tabs from JCR and they look really stout but, a lot of guys say you need to have it not only surface welded but welded on the back side too. Can I please get some suggestions to help make this stronger or is the surface weld going to be strong enough.

The bumper is made out of all 1/4" thick material and the tabs are 3/4" thick.

1/4" is pretty thick, but I would still weld front and back. Just cut a slot in the front and the back, slide the d-ring though and weld on both sides.

I had my uncle stick welded my JCR tabs to the rear bumper I made. It was 3/16" box steel. I V grooved the tabs before welding. I ended up going over it with a MIG. The bumper is now on Mud1059's rig, and he has used it for recovery on several occasions without fault YET. If I were to redo it, I would weld it to both sides.
