Custom Haro Backtrail BMX Build Done!

I have done a ton of them. None as good as my Haro, but it's mine, yanno? I used to scour yard sales for them, fix them up and then sell them for dirt cheap on CL to those who can't afford new ones. Of course, I never made any money, but providing that service was its own reward.

Carefull!!!!!!!!!!! He said Providing service to people on CL was its own reward. HMMMMMM

That's a Sears Screamer - the logo, if you look close, is SR - Sears and Roebuck. I believe that's vintage '69, bud, and worth a couple coins. Be VERY careful not to screw any of it up, man, because that's a real, real rare bike!

Haha, funny you should ask about the gearing. I tried something new, and it's harder than hell to pedal it, but I may hold on to it for a bit because it's a nice workout. The front is a 44t, the rear 14 - the Haro shoots out of the hole like a rocket, but it's like a mountain bike in sixth gear, lol! Ack! Tried something new, not sure I like it.

Front is 3/8, rear is 14mm. I don't really get too much air and all that so I don't think the 3-piece cranks are going to be necessary, but I'll add them if I can find a set for the right price. The Haro cranks on the thing came to me for free, so I have hope. :D

14MM, thats right. ya i liked 39/15 gearing for trails and dropped to a 36 front for the street. The single piece cranks are nice cuz they are less bulky but damn I used to bend the crap out of em.

Looks good, im diggin the red fron tend too

Thanks, bro! I like original, one-off designs, so I figured I’d try it.

I finally bought me some freewheel removers. When they get here, I’m going to play around with gear ratios. The original freewheel came with 18t, and dropping four teeth really, really made a difference. I can’t walk after riding this thing around the block, haha!

I didn't have a freewheel remover, though, so I couldn't put the old one on, lol. I went to the local bike shop and they were out of everything but 14t, so I figured, what the heck? NOT good, haha.

Also, I'm really into old school bikes, and hate the 990 brakes. Just thought I'd chuck that out there. HATE them.

Ditched the brakes the following week. I HATE brakes at all.

if you look the whole bike looks bent. was just swinging around really fast and the camera was a POS so it looks all curved like that

Hoffman frame was killer i really liked how it rode and the longer top tube being a taller guy. but i really missed my DK frame

My Haro has a really, really short top tube, and I love it. In fact, it’s what drew me to that bike in the first place, besides it being a Haro. I have relatively short legs, and so the bike fits me well. When you get to pedaling fast, that bike gets downright scary – I love it.

Ha, you are right, the entire bike does appear bent. Great shot, though! I never rode that hard, I just like to scoot around and do the occasional trick and whatnot.

44/16 is the so called sweet spot... i run 33/12. same ratio.... 2.75/1

mat hoffman was the MAN, but his bikes were all made overseas.... pretty shitty quality compared to american.

ive allways like shorter bikes... i grew up riding a 18.75 top tube warpig.... when everyone told me i should ride a holmes or dirtbike at 21"+. allways damaged my shins more than my knees anyways. know what you mean about the shorter bikes... they 'POP' more easily than a long frame.

cannot agree more on brakes.... XXXX em. dont need em.

riding bmx HARD, 1pc cranks were NEVER an option, i can bend 1pc cranks on a single bunnyhop... but maybe that makes me fat, got a XXXXing awesome set of wombolt's now.
