Cruise control wire around

I was removing some unnecessary items under the hood like the nonworking AC etc, when I happened to remove the Cruise control by cutting the wires, unbolting the CC and throwing it away. A couple of weeks later, I realized that my jeep (1989 Cherokee AW4) no longer shifts- (works manually)- I did not connect the two events at first so my nonshifting trans now has new fluid, filters, and solenoids- still no shift. The 7.5 fuse on the block also has no power, but the TCU fuse does have power. From wiring diagrams it seems that it had something to do with the power/comfort switch and the NSS - seems like the absent CC may be the culprit? Any ideas or any know how to wire around the missing CC to get the shifting back? ( short of a new cc unit) This jeep is a cobbled together barn find that sat for 10 years, but it runs and drives good.

Start at the TCU, test that it has power and ground at the connector. As I recall, power on yellow and red with the key on, and black was ground. Check that you didn't damage the ground wires on the passenger side of the engine block, as that's where a lot of stuff grounds, including the TCU.

On an 89, there is also a fuse in the wiring harness near the TCU. See the second picture at https://cruiser54.com/?p=58. (Great site, btw, go do all of his tech tips).

When you say shifts manually, it's trying to start in 4th gear with the shifter in (D) and power to the TCU right? Do you have power to the #1 solenoid in park with key-on? Have you measured the solenoid resistance from the TCU plug to rule out wiring harness damage or bad solenoids. I see you just replaced them, so likely the solenoid is good. Should be 11-15 ohms. The fuse that feeds the NSS also feeds the reverse lights, btw.
