Craftsman 3/8 ratchet and sockets.... 10pcs./10 bux

not a bad price at all-- I've got a variant of those sets (all in one kit- vice two) under the seat for quickey repairs, but I've got to comment that the ratchet in those sets has proven to be the weakest Craftsman ratchet I've ever used-- and that reminds me.... I've got to go see Sears for another replacement.....

are you guys cleaning/greasing your craftsman ratchets? they come new with very little grease and it is crap. doesnt take long before they dry out, skip, and ratcheting becomes very rough and stiff. take them apart, clean with a wire brush and solvent. grease them with a good quality grease. make sure you dont loose the little ball bearing. use grease on the spring too. re assemble and wonder why you never have done this before.
by the way, sears does this to the ones you bring back, then gives them out as replacements. next time you are at the counter, look for 2 boxes of ratchets. one is full of repaired ones, and another with ones broken. the repaired box has a lot more in it.

yep, still have a couple of those, but lost a few of my favorite "old" ones when my travel box got stolen. lost my good pro series craftsmen polished wrenches too. the old ones, not the new ones they pass off as professional series. though i had to replace them with the new version. weird box end angle, and open end has much shorter throw. not even as deep as the regular craftsman combo wrenches. havnt had a problem with them as of yet, but it is just in the back of my mind. i tend to reach for the regular ones first now.

for a good ratchet at a great price, check out Toolsdelivered.com they sell snap on industrial series in the williams brand name. same as snap on closed head ratchets at a fraction of the price. no you can not flag down a snap on truck when/if one fails, but they do come with a send in warranty.

I've had my Craftsman set since '92. I do hit the ratchet with some PBB or ATF occasionally, as it spent most of a day underwater when we were putting a dock together for a buddy. Aside from breaking a socket, they've been excellent tools. The newer stuff, I don't think is as good, but at HF prices, it's hard to complain.

I always disassemble my new ones and pack them with grease. They are a little stiff at first, but once the excess gets worked out, they glide like butter

hey souske, try the red grease next time. seems to work best for mine. seems to last the longest too. mine get waisted quick because i have no concrete to work on, everything is dirt and my tools sometimes seem to find their way into it.

I took my old ones into my local ACE hardware store, and pulled three new ones right off the rack. I don't know if all ACE's carry Craftsman tools but ours does.

I had never packed a new one until I got that style. It felt sloppy from the first day, so I greased it up. It was ok for a while, but it felt sloppy after a few months of use. I decided it may have been a "friday afternoon" build and traded it for a new one. Sadly, even after packing that one with grease, it feels about the same.

I'll probably request a credit for that style and choose another style and pay the difference.

I greased my ratchet up today, the little ball bearing was a pain gezz. Filled it with redline red'n'tacky grease. Mine was pretty dry and real dirty inside, glad I saw this thread and took some initiative to go out and grease it.
