We had this discussion a couple weeks back and I got my rear chewed out by several members for saying CKP...

My opinion is as follows:

CPS could be understood as Crankshaft Position Sensor OR Camshaft Position Sensor

Saying CKP sensor or CMP sensor can only be understood as one or the other.

My manual says CKP and CMP, it says CPS for non-Renix systems.

When I tell the guy at any auto-parts store that "I need a CPS for an 89 Cherokee 4.0L I6" he usually says "Crankshaft sensor or Camshaft?"

When I tell him CKP or CMP, he knows what the hell I'm talking about. As do the local dealerships....

I basically just want to see what more people call it as. Wouldn't it be wonderful to come to a final way to name these particular parts to avoid any confusion?

I've been calling the crankshaft sensor in shorthand as CPS, and the camshaft position sensor as SYNC (since that's what my RENIX manual sez...)

When I'm talking to someone, I usually give the full name, but that's how I write it down when I'm taking notes to myself, and when I'm writing anything technical or I'm writing a list.

How's that? I've always called the crankshaft position sensor a CPS here, and the camshaft position sensor the SYNC, and no-one seems to have misunderstood me yet...

ckp/cmp , but i work on mostly obd2 stuff .

friday at work we were laughing about all of the alphabet soup
( acronyms ) that goes on under the hood these days .
it can get pretty damn confusing sometimes , even with the fsm's !!!!

Good input guys. I'll admit it, I also write down CPS when I'm taking notes on stuff I'm doing, but I know what I wrote it down for so there's no way I'll get confused...lol

keep it up fellas, thanks!
