Hey,

I'm contemplating getting a WJ, year models 2001-2003. As I don't know a bunch about the WJ's I was wondering if anyone here knows how they hold up maintenance what to expect etc... Or if anyone could direct me to a no BS forum(ie. not JU), hopefully something exsist like a www.nawja.com...would be my dream. Anyway if you know anything bout these models shoot me a PM or respond.

Thanks a ton,

Majo

I own a 2000 and love it no major problems and with a 40 series flowmaster and open air intake the thing sounds like a beast. Go to www.NAGCA.com lots of good info.

I bought my wife a 2002 because I am a whipped little pu$$y and could not talk her into a used XJ. It has turned out to be a very comfortable, capable, quiet Jeep. Currently 32K on it and doing fine, I did get the I6 so i knew the engine woulf be reliable.

my father got a 2001 4.0L WJ w/ the 242 as per my reccomendation.

the only thing that's been troublesome is the transmission.

the chrysler 42re uses electronics to regulate governor pressure (their way of controlling shift points)

the electronics themselves are unreliable and have a 60k-80k mile lifespan. but that's really the only problem.

people will say the 4.0L is "underpowered" in the WJ, but they must be smokin crack, I can EASILY max out the speedo and keep it there.

the governor pressure tranducer and solenoid run about $150 for the set, and it's pretty easy to replace. so if it starts slipping, shifting funny and starting out in too high a gear, replace them. (you can manually run through all the gears if they fail)

Go 4.7, mine will smoke pretty much anything on the street while being about the most comfortable and decent handling SUV out there. The 4.0 is ok but trying to pass on a 2 lane in heavy traffic can be a bit more of a challenge. Mines at 30k now and haven't had any problems at all. You can find out all you ever wanted to know about WJ's here - http://www.wjjeeps.com/ they even have all the TSB's.

My wife drives a '00 4.7 Limited WJ. It's probably the most comfy car we've ever owned. I'm very impressed with the power of the 4.7 we used it to tow my XJ out to Moab from Detroit.

I love mine its a 2002 Overland Edition with the 4.7L H.O. . The HO puts out 265hp and 335lbs

of torque and the regular 4.7L puts out 235hp and 295lbs of torque. It runs like a raped ape. Of course mine has some mods ans a 4" lift with 32" MTRs but its my DD and its the most comfortable all around SUV Ive had. They look pretty nice also. I ve takin it offroad quite a bit but it just got to be too much when I was slammin down on rocks and pushin through tree branches and scratchin it up, so I bought the XJ for some real offroading. Heres some pics of my WJ

have you driven a 4.0L WJ?

they don't "lack" any kind of get-up and go by any means.

I haven't driven a 4.7 WJ, but if the 4.0L one is "gutless" comparatively speaking, than that must be one fast fawkin Jeep!!!

Drove the 4.0 and it was pretty decent, (didn't call it "gutless") just seemed like it was a tad slower than the same set up in the XJ's but I guess that would be due to the weight difference, 3.73's instead of the 3.55's might have helped too. Then after I drove the 4.7 I fell in love with it.
The 4.7 ends up doing around the mid to upper 14's in the 1/4 in stock form, about the same as the 5.9 ZJ's. I believe all the 4.7's have the 44a rear, 3.73 gearing, and the 5 speed auto. The 3.73 gearing really helps with the off the line umph, and the 5 speed really helps making sure your right in the sweet spot of the torque curve when you punch it to pass someone.
For real fun Kenne Bell makes a S/C and chip for the 4.7, and there are NOS kits. I've heard tell of mid to low 12's out of WJ's with no internal mods just bolt on parts.
I've smoked a few Mustang GT's light to light (baby seat, groceries, and all in the back of mine :rof: ).

I have a 2001 WJ Limited with the 4.7L V8. I love it. The only major problem has been the rotors. They were warped after 20k. I did some research on JU and NAGCA and it is a problem with some WJ's. I replaced mine with sones that are drilled and slotted and I use ceramic pads as well. It will stop on a dime now.

I installed a K&N FIPK on it and gained some hp and about 3-5 mpg. That would be the first and best mod I would recommend to anyone.

I am trying to talk the wiffy into letting me put a 2" budget boost kit on it.

Just in case anyone else has the same issues.
Dealer would have put new calipers, rotors, and pads on it for ya but since you swapped out for aftermarket I don't think they'd do it now. BTW which rotors did you use? I put the TRW crossdrilled on the XJ and their 911 pads and really do notice a pretty signifigant difference.

It depends on the dealer if they will replace. I didn't buy my WJ from the dealer here in town so he wasn't playing ball. The problem is the OEM will warp again in due time. The OEM rotors have to much crappy steel in them.

I got my Rotors off of Ebay. Don't know the exact brand. You see the guy selling them from time to time. They are slotted and drilled. I figured for $250, what the hell. I did some reserach from others who had bought rotors from the same guy and no one had any complaints about the rotors, Not yet at least.

I compared the rotors when I took the old ones off and the new ones were a little bit beefer and the quality seemed better from a visual inspection. If these don't cut it then I will definately upgrade. The braking is much better than the old ones before they warped. The shaking was becoming a problem.

It gave me a chance to work on my WJ since I tend to work mostly on my XJ.

I have owned a 78-CJ5, 85-XJ, 94-ZJ, 03-WJ, and 90-MJ.
It is by far the the nices JEEP I've had!!!!!!!!!!! :loveu:

I'll be glad to answer any question you have.

I have an 01 WJ and love it. Got the K&N air filter for it, good idea too, paper filters cost $18! I lifted it 2.5 inches and an running 31 10.50s with Cherokee Echo rims. A small lift goes a long way on this Jeep! I wrote an article on install instructions for the lift and bump stops with pics because the lift is pretty new there is not a lot of install help online. I have pics of it if you want e-mail me [email protected] or for more info.
