Need a comuter geeks help here...somehow a pop-up or email, I believe it was the pop-up stopped all pictures, symbols, links and figures from loading while viewing different websites. All buttons to click on for instance search, home, smileys... are all shown as a white box with a red x in the middle. I dont know if this will even work cause my computer is now all goofey looking...but if someone knows how this can be fixed I would greatly appreciate it.

1. WHich OS do you have?
2. How do you connect to the internet?
3. Have you seen any weird error messages recently?
4. Are you current on all windows updates? (if windows is the OS)

Also keep in mind that today the net is going nuts due to that damn RPC exploit......

I believe it is Windows Millenium Ed., I connect with a dial up old school phone line, I have had one error message for a while telling me something to the affect that Mmod is not working whatever that is or does beats me, but does not affect my comp. in any other way and I am still getting the message, and I am not using any upgrades or updates, and it started two days ago.

hmmm ME...... sorry man, but I'm not even going to touch that can of worms.... As much as I think MS puts out pretty good products, ME is the evil exception to that rule and as a rule, I don;t even approach those machine as one fix/solution causes more problems and it;s a never ending battle.....
Do yourself a fabour and move up to XP or win2k (XP preferrably)

In Internet Explorer, check your security level and privacy. Goto tools / internet options / security and then privacy. It sounds like you might have too high of a setting. Make sure it is medium or medium high.

While I was working for an OEM producer we packed all our ME OEM's up and sent them back, thank god but we still had all the ones we sold to deal with.
A good ME solution is regular reinstallations. :D

I agree completely. Win 2000 is probably the most stable with XP pro a second. Better yet go to Linux.

Still though, sounds like a browser issue and not and OS issue. Check all of your settings in your browser (Java applets, cookies, etc.) and your anti-virus software if it has a personal firewall built in. Are you on a network?

Now you have me all screwed up I thought I have ME but I am now not sure if its ME or 2000...how can I double check from my computer? You will also have to tell me how to check my browser settings and what to look for in a step for step format. Right now I dont care if something else screws up as long as I can normally view a website. Sorry for the inconvenience but I need non expert type of help here. Thanks for your help so far, I did redo the security setting to default medium.

One tab to the right of where your security settings are in Internet Explorer is Privacy tab. Make sure it is set to Medium as well. Then hit OK. Close the browser (Internet Explorer) and reopen. Does it still give you the x's where pictures should be? If so then go to this link - http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ - and see what updates it might have for internet explorer. Are you using a dial-up modem? if so then start the download process before you goto sleep and check it when you wake up;)

Checking Operating System version:
  1. Open up "Control panel" by clicking "Start", then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
  2. Double click on "System"
  3. The "General" tab wil be open on the System Properties window. The operating system you are using is under the "System:" heading.

Checking your security settings in Internet Explorer:
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click "Tools" on the pop up menu click "Internet Options..."
    3. Click on the "Security" tab.
    4. In the security window there will be an icon that says "Custom Level..." click it.
    5. The security setting window will open. Towards the bottom will be a drop down menu with your current security setting in it. It should be set to "Medium"

Here we go again...checked my system and it is ME and I double checked my security setting. I also checked that website for updates and it gave me one to update but did not download and my comp is still screwed up. I am about ready to take it in to be fixed.

Sounds like Java is no longer accessible by IE or corrupted. What version of Internet Explorer are you running? (From an open IE window, click on "Help" and then "About Internet Explorer" to see what version you are running.) If you are running version 5 or 5.5 you can use Windows update to download version 6. If you are already using verion 6, try reinstalling it.

Go to your device manager, write down all the hardware that is in there, model number of video card, network card, burner, right on down the line including the chipset stuff in the system area and usb stuff.
Make sure you have all the drivers for those cards and hardware on CD or floppy, if not get them from the vendors before starting this.
Wipe the machine, make a boot floppy with fdisk on it, delete the partition.
Reboot the machine, go into setup either thru the delete key or F2, set the bios so that it boots off the cd. Save and exit.
Stick the WinMe cd in and boot, then just reinstall the whole thing, after the OS is in install the chipset software first, disk drivers second, video third, then just start installing the drivers one by one that the OS did not recognize. Takes a while which is why I charge a two hour bench fee for doing this even though it usually takes longer.
Oh, and before you make your first internet connection make sure you have updated anti-virus software installed and running. Helps to download the latest version and signature files before wiping the box.
Where are you located ??
*sometimes* you can rerun the winME installer and reinstall, this keeps the files, drivers and stuff but you have to reinstall registered programs.
ME is a bi-annual operating system, needs to be done 2x a year :D
