Comp. codes?

Oh forgot about another common issue that trips misfire codes on 00-up, the cam sensor/oil pump drive walking out of sync. Some early ones even had them seize up.

hey all, some weird stuff is happening again, engine light went back on, and it started shaking. not sure what to do now. MJR any way to check the "cam sensor/oil pump drive walking out of sync"? any possible solutions? im thinking to just take it to jeep and let them diagnose and fix the problem, but i dont want to spend the money on their labor when i can probably do it myself. So i guess its back to the original question if anyone can help me out with a diagnostic comp. that can tell me whats wrong. But not the ones at autozone and stuff that i already tested, something that can actually tell me what the problem is so i can just go out and replace the part. Thanks to all who have helped so far, and in advance to those who help later on.

Taking it to MJR is the same thing as taking it to jeep, except you don't have to bring your own lube. ;)

Something to think about it the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor). It was making my 98 run like crap with rough idle, hesitating, and shaking when stopped. Its only $40-$50 and worth a shot if you ask me before you spend a lot at a dealership.

i would try that but i dont think thats the problem as the codes were reading cylnder misfire, and the shaking only occured after i had been running the engine for a little while to full temp. then turning it off. once i turned it back on after couple min. thats when it was running really rough. i would have tried it anyways but i already replaced the coil and dont really want to be guessing anymore because the $$$ will begin to add up.

The issue you are describing sounds like the other TSB (18-031-03) for 00-01 years for a hot soak rough idle/check engine lamp on restart. There is a fiberglass sleeve that can be installed (doubled up cut as needed) on the #3 injector for the issue. Part # is 56028371AA for the sleeve.

I am more than willing to look at it for you if you don't mind the drive to Costa Mesa or Irvine.

Other things to consider doing (if they haven't been done or used crappy parts) are a tuneup (using either Champion or NGK plugs) and other maintenance as needed.

hey mike, if you dont mind, i would really appreciate if you would be able to reset the TSB, and it would save me the money if it turns out to be the problem. let me know if you have the time this weekend as i go to school during the week. it will probably take me an hour to get there from santa monica, but probably worth the time if youre willing. thanks a lot.

ya but the question is if MJR is wililng.

He usually is, if the person asks in a polite manner and maybe offers to buy dinner..

Sunday would have to be the day but I need you to give me the part number off your engine controller. It will start with 5604 have 4 more numbers and 2 letters (like 1801AB).

Do you want me to get the sleeve also?

Mike R

hey mike, really appreciate it here's the engine controller number 56041386AB.
I'm not exactly sure if that sleeve will work but if its only like $10 and not too much trouble for you, ya sure why not. if you can PM your address and phone number that would be helpful too. Thank you.

Part number must be wrong. $3.56 for the sleeve.

sure if the sleeve isn't any trouble to get, as for the number, thats what it says i just checked it again. its a 2001 xj. its located under the dash board, and starts with 5604 and ends with 2 letters so im assuming thats the number. is it essential that you need to know the number now, or can it wait until you see it tomorrow? thanks.

I get that CYL 3 misfire bullcrap all the time out in the desert. I just reset the light when I get back home. :repair:

If anyone in the Pomona/LaVerne area needs codes checked/reset I have the laptop interface tool. Just let me know.

That's the trans controller. The engine one is underhood on the left fender. If it's an automatic then it should be 56041801??. I have the flash file loaded if that's the one. I have the sleeve also.
