Comanche tailgate on a cherokee?

I find that tailgates are very useful for a lot of reasons. Has anyone seen a comanche tailgate grafted onto a cherokee with a modified(shortened) rear hatch?

Kind of like a fj80 where the glass hatch and metal tailgate meet together in the middle?

I see a lot of fj60's with a wagongear (wagongear.com) compartment built in, that seems like an excellent use of space.

I have seen them on chopped xjs but never with half the original upper, I would think the window is too big.

What if you somehow did without the rear window and just put the tailgate in? The only problem I see with the rear hatch on these Jeeps is the lack of window hinge so you can open the rear window without opening the whole hatch like ZJs have. I'm assuming that's what the OP wants to do, but it might just be easier to do without the window itself, maybe just put a cage/rack in.
It might be noisy but if you made the tailgate easy to take out and put on, putting the hatch in when you need it wouldn't be a bad thing.

More than that, it'd be dangerous.

Having at window open is a good way to suck exhaust fumes into the cabin, that's why you don't see a lot of vehicles anymore with opening rear windows and a flat back.

The old vans with the pop open windows were the worst!

I'm basically describing the tailgate idea as though it would be like a ZJ/WJ/WK/KJ with the glass open. Those all have opening back glass, and I'm assuming having just a tailgate on an XJ would be a lot like having the backglass open on one of those vehicles.

yeah, after some research I see what you mean...I wouldn't mind fabbing the panels that the tailgate attaches to, I guess, and sourcing a smaller liftgate from a snugtop or something wouldn't be too hard...

just probably more work than its worth...lol. thanks for the input, fella's...

Main goal is to provide more storage and more of a camp cooking/gear stowage surface while out in the boonies.

I guess I could just go buy another aluminum camp table, but thought I'd explore this after geekin' out on wagongear's site... (my dad has an 80, and will likely go with that setup)
