Yeah, I'm wondering the same things you guys are....... What year is it? How many were made? Was it built on a Metric Ton platform?

Ok, so on this elusive MJ RV.........

From my limited on-line research, I believe the "Spirit" RV conversions were done by Itasca which is part of Winnebago Corp. So, I sent them an e-mail.

I got a reply from someone at Winnebago Corp and they're willing to do some searching of their records. A VIN would be helpful, but unfortunately that's not likely to come to light. I sent them the photos - hopefully it'll help narrow down some info.

Using the photos in this thread, I called the phone number visible on the window of the shop it's parked in front of. I spoke with "Keith" who owns the shop and this is what he could tell me:

It sold "3 weeks to a month ago" and belonged to a 10+ year customer of his. His shop did all the maintenance/service of it over those past 10 years. He said it was "super clean and very low miles. He said it was a 2wd and wasn't positive but believes it was an '86. He said he thinks the new owner came from Montana to buy it and that the buyer was a Comanche enthusiast.

Beyond that, "Keith" wasn't real helpful. He denied having ever had the RV for sale at his shop, nor did he do the craigslist ad and found it "very odd" that there would have been photos of it in front of his shop. He was almost alarmed that the photos would be found on Google....... but he's an old guy.......

I'd find it hard to believe it to be an '86....... but the 10 slot grille does suggest it to be pre '87. I dunno who in their right minds building RV's would remotely think that it'd be a good idea to power that size of an RV with that anemic 2.8 V6...... I'd be more inclined to think it's an '87-'90.........maybe the grille got changed........ :dunno:

The dually ones were done with some sort of wheel spacer. I have been trying to track down the site for the company that made the dually rear fender flares for a while now, someone (I think it was Yella? Still got that link? LOL) gave it to me but I managed to lose it sometime in the last few months.

That is a BIG 5 lug pattern on those wheels, too. Wow.

Yella - do you think that the owner would be willing to try to talk to the guy who sold it and see if he could give you any other info?

"Keith" said the seller was a widow - sold it when her husband died. Keith wasn't real open or interested. Seemed a bit suspicious and stand-off-ish.

Some of the Toyota RV's had full float, 3rd member axles with the big lug pattern. Others used a single wheel that could mount 2 tires like these:

Here, you can see the adaptor/spacer on a Toyota to make the big lug wheels work. The MJ "dealer modified" duallies used spacers for the D30 and D44 axles to mount these style wheels.

The company making the dually flares is located in Florida. Their info is in drachir's dually build thread over on ComancheClub.

If and when I ever build my Metric Ton Dually....... this is the axle I'll be using. A Toyota 1 ton full float unit.

Ends up looking like this with the dual rear wheels

I know where one of these axles with wheels is sitting in a junk yard....... unfortunately, the yard won't pull it and won't put the RV it's under on jack stands for me to go pull it.

Bring a high lift to the yard. I never go without it anymore.

Thanks for the flare info, will go look!

LOL..... none of the junkyards out here will let you bring a jack of any kind in. Some you can't even bring grinders/cutting wheels in because of the sparks......

that blows. The ones around here either cut stuff out for you for a fee, or let you do whatever you want as long as there isn't open flame.

Probably because those yards are independantly owned and they like to make money. Most of the yards out here have been bought out by LKQ or similar corps and they are all kinds of liability paranoid.

MJ and trailer doin' work!

Last Saturday at the SoCal Fest event, we had bookend MJs on the Doran/Odessa loop at Calico. I was the trail leader and JohnX was the tailgunner in his MJ with Volvo portal axles and 36s.
