And only vehicles that are 8 through 11 years will get their OBD checked and mentions the CEL being on. My 5.9, from 98, is 16 years old as of right now.

From what I understand the CEL still won't be a failure for you. It was always just an advisory before and sounds like for vehicles 12+ years old it will still be, but you should probably call and ask for sure to play it safe.

I'm not sure what they're doing with the vehicles 8-11, I'm guessing they'll still be ran on the Dyno but will also have the OBDII system checked as well. It would be cool if they only plugged them in to check things and called it good, but I'm not sure.

Vehicles 7yrs and newer are exempt. It used to be that only brand new vehicles maintained their exemption, so if you bought a car used it still had to be tested even if it fell in the exemption period. I'm not sure if that has changed or not. Its been years since I worked there.

The VIN verification can be done at the E-Test facility, pretty convenient as you'll be there already. I think its 9$ but I can't remember.

There are no safety inspections here, just the E-test.

Beginning in the eighth model year, and extending through the eleventh model year, the vehicle inspection process will include an inspection of the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD and OBDII) systems. Instead of a driving test on the dynamometer (the “treadmill” test), vehicles will be “plugged in” to read the codes in their on-board computers.

So it sounds like if your vehicle falls in that 8-11yr old window then you won't run the dyno. Good news for those of us running oversized tires.

I just called and the guy that answered didn't really know if the CEL would still be an advisory or a fail on the 12+ year old vehicles. So yeah, a lot of help that was.

There is no safety or equipment inspection in Colorado. They wont be looking at seatbelts, tint on windows or lights, tires, brakes......none of that.

Still cant test with tires larger than 33".... and if theyre 33" with aggressive tread like Swampers or Pit Bulls they wont allow them. Its a safety issue with the side rollers on the dyno....the lugs can climb over the rollers.

Colorado air care techs are supposed to do an inspection of the exhaust and emissions equipment under the hood (evap canister & hoses, air pump etc...) but I've experienced this to be very inconsistently done.

They pressure and seal test your gas cap and will fail your car if the cap fails so look yours over for cracks or seepage. You'll have to buy a new cap and do the entire test again to pass.

Ive been tossing around the idea of turning a xj or comanche into welding rig. Its purpose would be to get back into areas a full size truck cant.

so either a lifted comanche with a flatbed or a lifted xj with the seats taken out and a pull out table built into the back.

opinions?

I would think a Comanche with a flat bed would be a better option than trying to keep it all inside an XJ.

The thing I would be worried about would be weight though.

Field welders aren't light, I would think that you'd be needing some sort of extra support leafs, airbags, etc. in the rear to keep you from bottoming out.

I was thinking of the typical gas/diesel ones that tend to take up 1/3 to 1/2 of a fullsize pickup bed :laugh:

I would think a Comanche with a flat bed would be a better option than trying to keep it all inside an XJ.

Even with the lighter welder, it and the propane tank, tools and other gear would still be pretty heavy.

Then the flatbed, made from square tube and flat plate would very likely outweigh the stock MJ bed.....theyre pretty light, two guys can lift one off.

Then you wanna lift it, and re gear it for bigger tires...... killing power and MPG. Mountain highway driving would bring the suck.

If you still think an MJ flatbed would fit your needs..... look for a longbed Metric Ton so that you get the D44 and heavier rated leaf packs......or pony up to buy reproduction M.T. packs and an axle.
