Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I'm shocked the pothead could muster up the initiative to leave the couch much less get confrontational. Isn't that the drum the potheads always bang away on? That pot keeps people peaceful and chill?

Probably smoking dirt weed..... Needs more THC.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Here is what you do, take an old boombox and put it on the other side of the truck that is blocking view of you working. Now insert a mix tape of Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, and whatever 70's music you can think of. Hit the play button and go to work, the guy will raise his stoner head off the couch, hear some classic music of the weed days gone bye, see those sparky sparks of welding, and think he's back at that one festival out there in that one field somewhere having a great time. Problem solved.

Mostly they are ,but when their high is disturbed they gripe about it and get bitchy not violent just obnoxiously bitchy ...lol...like when they get fired up for a protest . When he looks across the street into that lot and sees that toy he has no idea he's looking at never ending welding project , so he may aswell consider....

No joy in mudville.

Last weekend of hunting (bow) season on the homestead. Riley and I woke before the sun and spent the last couple hours sitting, listening, hiking, and watching. Literally not a track to be found on the property (coyote, fox and rabbit notwithstanding). Mighty Casey has struck out. :(

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I got this 30-ton shop press back in the Fall and I've encountered an issue with the punch. The old owners broke off the punch inside of the press plate collar and after years of using it like that, it's snugged inside. I've tried heating and twisting/hammering it and PB Blaster - that sum bitch is stuck in there! There no way to press it out from the top unless I drill a hole in the plate (which I'm not looking to do).

This wasn't a problem until I purchased a brake for it and that requires a larger punch.

Any ideas on how to get this thing out?

Hmmmmm......

Re: The Colorado BS thread

PB it, rap the collar from the side with a ball peen hammer. Work your way around with the hammer.

If that doesn't shake it loose, make the collar glow a dull red and twist the center out.

Yeah I tried that. I left my rosebud on that sucker until it was glowing. No dice. I was being optimistic in thinking it would just fall right out after a few love taps. Nope.

I think it's going to have to be drilled out like Flores said.

The Colorado BS thread

Cut it flat, drill it in the center, tap the hole, and thread in a slide hammer.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

The other option is to end load it more and more (fortunately it seems to have come to you preinstalled in a specially built frame with a ram for just such a purpose) while trying to turn it with a pipe wrench. It's probably got a hell of a lot of preload on those threads, ramming it into something with the press should reduce that a bit.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

What about drilling through the top and drive it out with an air hammer or solid punch?

First: Flores' suggestion bears consideration. I'd do that as a last resort.

Second: you must have taken that picture before you put the heat to it.

I tend to tone things down so people don't go overboard. If I had put heat on that fitting, you'd see scorched paint for two inches around the weld. You can ask YELLAHEEP about my hammer skillz... :D

On that note:
HIT IT WITH YOUR FRICKIN' PURSE!!!!!!!!
If that doesn't work, make the entire collar glow orange, and start cranking on the ram with a "good sized" pipe wrench.

P.S. I'd take that part off the press before going mid-evil on the steel.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Get some dry ice and acetone. Put the dry ice in the acetone and put it in a cup. It will get very cold. Now heat the whole thing, then dip the punch in the acetone. The massive temperature differential will cause the pin to shrink. Quickly use a pipe wrench to break it free and then you should be able to work it free before it freezes again, but if not, just repeat it a couple of times.

Beware of heating the main cross member too hot as it will ruin the temper. Also, quickly cooling it from too hot a temp can harden the steel and make it brittle and prone to snapping.

I like the idea of drilling a hole in the top then pressing it out from the top, but since I have a mill at home, I would most probably cut the punch flush, drill down through the center of the punch, then use a boring bar to slowly increase the diameter of the hole until you hog out the whole thing. You might just pull the whole cross member out and take it to your local machinist with a 12/24 pack of Fat Tire on a Friday afternoon and have it done in 15 minutes.

Now we're talking! lol

I was very hesitant to heat up that collar too much as I've personally seen hardened metals shatter under pressure and seriously injure people. One guy caught a piece of shrapnel in the throat about an inch from his artery. Scary stuff. And yes, I know Im neurotic. lol

As far as drilling it from the top; there's a gap between the two pieces of metal that holds the vollar. If I drill those two pieces large enough to fit an air chisel in there, I'm affraid it'll weaken the whole structural integrity of the press.

I'm really thinking that drilling or milling it out will be the best option.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I had to run a quick errand last night so I decided to take the 2011 Subaru because well....the heated seats make me feel good. I get home, pull in the driveway and then get in the zone to watch The Wire (decided to start all over again cuz it's so good). A car comes creeeeeping up my street. I hate that. Then I notice the 2011 is no longer in the driveway but all the way out in the street. I go running outside to see that the car slid all the way down the driveway because of the ice and damn near went into the creek. Thankfully it hit a patch of pavement that allowed for just enough grip. It was kinda funny only because it didn't end up in the ditch.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

lol, glad it didn't take a bath!

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I won't lie. I actually pulled it up again in the same spot. Why? Because it was pretty cool to sled down the driveway in heated leather (seats that is) while listening to the stereo. Heather didn't think it was too funny though.
