Colorado B/S Thread

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Caught a Craigslist ad for a farm estate auction and buried in the text of what they were selling was a '90 4x4 LWB MJ. One grainy photo on the auction house website.

Got to thinking that with the hundreds of antiques and other siliness being sold, not many would be flocking to this auction for an old MJ so I went.

Got there just before the auction started at 10 am. Auctioneer said the "good stuff" including the MJ would be auctioned at 1pm. Because this was out in the boonies, I just parked my truck close to the action so I could hear the auctioneer's PA system, fired up the A/C and hung out.

Went back to the activity before 1pm and the auctioneer was hip-deep into the "smalls" still....... I groaned to myself thinking they wouldn't get to the MJ for a while but luckily an auction staffer reminded the Auctioneer of the time. He promptly switched gears and headed over to the "good stuff".

He auctioned off a golf cart then got to the MJ. I had seen a few others looking at the truck, but when bidding got started at $500, only 3 of us were in.

Now, the truck was a super clean bodied rust-free Pioneer with badly faded/burned paint and super dried out rubber and seals. The engine ran, but had a poor idle and lots of the vacuum parts were missing as was the fan shroud and air box. This had been the farm owner's ranch truck since new, but definitely treated like a ranch truck. The interior was gross with dirt, dog hair matted into the pass side of the seat, etc. It had new Buckshot Mudder tires...... but that was more of a turn off to me as those tires suck to drive on the streets.

In my mind, I valued that truck at no more than $800 - $1000.

The auctioneer got the bids up quickly to $1000, then to $1200 where it stalled, I decided to throw better judgement to the wind and bid $1250. Two others then got into a bidding war up to $1550....... I said no thanks and began walking when I heard the auctioneer say "Fellas, the owner has set a reserve of $1800 for the truck so I'll need that in order to sell it."

WHAT?!?!?! I wasted hours out in bumble-**** farm land to hopefully grab an MJ for cheap to reasonable money and the damn thing has a reserve? GRRRRR. They should be required to tell you that on the auction item list and at the opening of the auction..... then START THE DADGUM BIDDING AT THE RESERVE.

Rant off........ :soapbox:

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I paid $1700 for my 92 long bed 2wd. Which was still too much imo. But then again only 150xxx, very well maintained ,and being a unicorn. I was ok with the price.

I'd buy THAT truck in a heart-beat at that price. That would be ideal for my dually project.

I saw that exact same ad on CL.

Seeing how things like that have gone lately (and the fact that I don't have the $ to spend on something like that right now) I wasn't going to even waste my time.

Those kind of auctions tend to go 1 of 2 ways...either get it for dirt cheap...or it ends up way higher than it should be.

I don't know how that one does things...but does your bid also include the estate auction fee? That can usually add 10-20% to the price. I've been bidding on some guns from an estate sale...but when you add the 15-18.5% in for "fees", sometimes they end up right where they would be if you went to the store and bought it first hand

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Well the silly part of all this is the Thursday before the auction, I went to their website and sent off an e-mail asking for details and reserve on the truck. I also left a phone message asking them to call me about the truck. By auction day, I hadn't heard from them.

Their auction house does not charge a bidder fee unless you use a credit card. But I know what you mean, it's just like the insurance auction houses, charging a percent of the winning bid amount tacked onto the total owed by the bidder. Definitely sucks if you don't know that's coming......

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Can we just get 1 month when we're not engulfed in flames or drowning in flood water? Mother Nature has been having some raging PMS lately.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

No kidding.

My folks' cabin is right on the bank of the Big Thompson in Estes Park. The house is about 40' from the bank, the 2 car detached garage and shop is maybe 15'.

They called earlier today, the garage was under 3-4' of water. The cabin was just a couple feet from the water surge. They moved as much out as they could, then started stacking furniture on the tables and counters. The main elevated road in/out of Estes (Hwy 36) is submerged as the lake has risen incredibly. The only way in/out of Estes is through the Rocky Mtn National Park.

Our back yard has flooded a couple times already but luckily it's draining ok........ no flooded basement or window well so far (knocking on wood).

Re: The Colorado BS thread

not to take away from the floods and all but WTF over

Re: The Colorado BS thread

What the problem? They're at a party in Utah. How else would YOU smuggle liquor?

:D

Folks OK, Troy? I saw some pics from Estes last night that says their house might not be...:scared:

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Unfortunately with cell service, phone service, power, etc all being out down there I'm only able to hear from them when they head out of Estes to where they can get signal.

I know they're ok - this week they were hosting a cousin's reunion for my Dad's side and had rented a large place up the mountain in Estes. 6 of the cousins are stranded there with them so they helped with removing things and stacking furniture.

The City did some pretty extensive work with heavy equipment to the river banks along their stretch of the Big Thompson last year........ but I'm not real optimistic it was enough to combat this kind of water event.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

Hey Jimmy........

All this rain has flushed out a whole bunch of your friends around my place. No fewer than 5 of 'em this size scurrying around my property as I was mowing the lawn......

That's not even cool man. I'd torch the house - all is lost.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I had one about that size or maybe a little larger (I dunno, I had my glasses off, and, well, was in a bit of a compromising situation) come flying out from under the shower curtain while I was halfway through taking a shower a couple years ago.

Didn't need any more waking up after that...

Re: The Colorado BS thread

My question is, what kind of sick asshole actually picks up huge spiders and then proceeds to take pictures of them.

Re: The Colorado BS thread

I don't... I jumped back, turned the water to max temp, and hosed that bastard with it until he curled up and rolled down the drain :shiver:
