finally got started on the tire carrier -- D44 hub/spindle/shaft for a hinge ala FrankZ and others unnamed....

cut a slot in the bumper for the base and cooked that 1/2" mother in there, once again testing the ability and duty cycle of my little welder - slow and hot...

Came out pretty well - it will get a gusset underneath tonight (I hope)

Shaft and spindle are now one, and with a little more grinding work will be ready to cook onto the base

maybe next week I can get it actually operational, although I'm also picking up the new trailer axle this weekend, tiling a couple of bathrooms, building a murphy bed... crap, too many friggin projects! eace::laugh2:

Got a little more work done before heading to Greality for the weekend... Shaft/spindle burned onto the base:

Gusset/bracing fabbed and cooked underneath (mostly) - its not that blurry in person:

coming together pretty well...

yeah, some good, some bad -- not looking to win a beauty contest, but I don't think its going anywhere.... I'm sure eflores will chime in with his virtual-interweb-penetration critique shortly.:roflmao:eace:

Flux core really makes for messy welds.

Considering the mass that's going to be hanging from the spindle, the tendency of a tire carrier like that to get into minor oscillations on any sort of road and the thickness of the parent metals..

it makes me nervous.

Sorry.. but you might want to have that redone with a more powerful welder.

not at all - I appreciate the specific feedback. To translate, your concern is penetration into the @ 1/2 plate base (its a bit thinner than that, actually), and the base of the spindle?

Flux core really makes for messy welds.

Yeah, not a fan of the Flux Core.

I can make it look pretty and be a good weld...but i'de just prefer to use my Gas setup

Jon beat me to it, but yeah, I'd be concerned as well.

Too bad you already put that angled support under the plate the spindle is welded to. I woulda suggested cutting a hole the size of the outter diameter of the end of that spindle into the plate, then welding it around the top and bottom.......... 20/20 hindsight being perfect and all that........

Did you grind a beveled edge into the spindle where it's welded to the plate? Maybe the penetration is better than we're aware of......... :dunno:

That'll definitely be an area to keep an eye on frequently to watch for metal fatigue Chris.

Looks like an awesome trip. Cannot wait till dillon gets a little older and we can take a trip like that. I hope you're kids appreciate that you're a cool dad. My dad played golf every weekend and gave me 20 bux to go hang out at the mall....

Maybe thats why i turned out the way i did :gee:

Well the good news is (a) I did drill a hole in the plate and put a plug weld on the shaft/spindle assembly (b) I pre-heated the shite out of everything with maap gass, and (c) BIG bevels on everything - We'll keep an eye on it, but all steel was pretty well heat-blued, and I'm fairly confident it penetrated well. We'll see (jimgrms probably won't wheel behind me now, though... :laugh3

Jonathan -- your days at the mall explain your cheerleader jeep (seriously, thanks for the compliment - I did play a little golf this month, but it was giving my oldest son his first couple lessons)

fine, its my last name, so I threw an emblem on there... I will confess, however, to be in the process of researching 4bt swaps -- I miss stroker power, and would like the enormous torque of even a small diesel (i.e. 350-400ft/lbs)!!assgas:

Got a last minute call from the SSG on Tuesday, "Mason your going to MEPS for inspec tomorrow."
I woke up yesterday, took a 2 min shower, packed my toothbrush and some clean boxers into a safeway bag, got Kiefer's tires, drove 90 all the way to my old place, parked the truck and literally ran to my recruiter's office and got there 30 min late. Then we drove to the hotel, I got a free dinner that tasted like it was a few days old, got to bed around 1am, alarm went off at 3am, everybody showered and got to breakfast at 4am, bus left at 4:15am, got my inpec done by 7am but you're not allowed to leave without your recruiter, so I sat on my ass in the federal bldg (no electronics and no sleeping allowed) from 7 till 4pm, went back to the recruiters office and processed the paperwork, and I got home 10 min ago.
I remember now why I hate MEPS. And I need a red bull.
And yes Kiefer, I did copy most of that from the comment I left ya on facebook lol.
